The problem has been that our defence was, for a long period of the season, dreadful so it didn't matter how well we played.
I got absolute pelters on Twitter for suggesting we’ve not being as awful this season as the league table suggests. We’ll finish the season* on a lot more points than the last time we were relegated from the Championship and I’ve found a lot more games enjoyable than in previous struggling seasons. Lapses in concentration have killed us but a lot of defeats or draws have been competitive ones. *obviously not with the current circumstances but you get my point
Of the three options considered to finalise Ligue 1 in France, we come nearest to surviving with the halfway point option (after 23 games) and the match day 27 option. We go down by 1 point in 3rd bottom in both scenarios.
I think if we do go down, and we keep this squad together (which under the circumstances, could be done) we’d do very very well. Div 1 attackers aren’t as sharp as championship strikers, and our defenders won’t then feel like they’re firefighting all the time and begin to build on their skills. At the end of the season we’ll have a well drilled. skilful, experienced defence. That’s when we’ll sell them all!
It's the errors that don't get punished. I don't think Lindsay, Pinnock and Davies was the fantastic combination people made out. I've seen us battered by Bristol Rovers, Coventry and Shrewsbury but still come out with 7 points. Agree it's just lower league forwards can't hit a camel's arse with a Banjo.
It’s so true. The Oxford game on the opening day, their striker is through on goal one on one at 0-0, and basically trips over the ball. I said at the time that in the Championship we’d be one down straight away. Davies doesn’t get in the team of the year if the defence in front of him was as solid as some make out. However, we were playing kamikaze attacking football so the protection for the centre backs wasn’t great, which is fine in that league when you had the players we did.
You've just reminded me of the Rochdale win at home. If they could finish they might have turned over our aggregate score.
We certainly weren’t dreadful but what we were was very poor defensively & we regularly made daft mistakes that you get punished for at championship level. In overall play we’ve been pretty decent. There were a couple of dull performances early on away at Wednesday & Birmingham when we were short on players & a couple of hammerings against Preston & at home to Stoke but most of the time even in defeat I’ve enjoyed watching us.
I would add Reading and Charlton away to that, and the frustration of watching the gung-ho second half against Brentford with Cavare, but I've enjoyed the games. We've played good football, created chances, looked to attack, but then ultimately had way too many face palm moments. I've rarely left feeling unentertained, just more frustrated that we've been closing so many times to having more points on the board.
Considering we were stepping up a level I think all these games we played better than just average; Fulham, Charlton, Wigan, Leeds, Forest, Derby, Swansea, WBA, Bristol City That's only going up to 1st November. Average is when you walk away thinking how did you manage to even get a point. Poor is when you've been comprehensively beat. In my opinion of course, which is probably why our numbers differ.
You don’t consider the level you are playing at that level so can be judged against the teams around you. We played well against Fulham twice and West Brom twice and could stretch that to Bristol. We were competent in 5-10 others. There were some truly horrendous performances like Luton at home but the vast majority of the rest were just meh. We tried very hard but weren’t up to the required standard. If we were less than 100% we got beaten and easily. Our defence is pitiful at that level. For once we have good attacking players but too often these efforts were undermined by the defence.
