Dale Tonge Live from Redfearn's Bar - 7pm Tonight

I enjoyed the interview, and once again, I admired the guy's honesty. Nevertheless, his position was one of assistant. Someone who carried out instructions, rather than someone who was tasked with leadership. It is very much easier to be honest when you are working to someone else's instructions and plan.

I was convinced that the team would struggle under Daniel Stendel in the season following promotion, and I thought that even before the side was decimated by the sale of our most influential players. In my view, the problem was that the pressing system employed by Stendel gifted too many chances to technically superior, and more talented teams. Loko posed the question about the poor results that led to Stendel's departure, but Dale did the loyal thing and supported his boss, even though that meant an implied criticism of the senior management of the club. I guess that it is only to be expected, and I guess that I am only interested in more detail because of my interest in systems and tactics, but I wish that Dale had been free to answer the question properly, and in more depth.

Yes they have, and there is no doubt that the transfer policy limits the success that we can expect in the Championship. However, the owners we have had since administration have run the company/football club conservatively, with the intention that the club live within its means. There are other ways of doing it, and many clubs have borrowed money (be that from the owner, or the bank with the owner guaranteeing the loan) and have invested that money in transfer fees and the wages of players that ordinarily, would be out of our reach. Now there are those who argue long and hard that that is the way we should go. However, at heart, I am very much risk averse. I see that such a change in policy might lead to another brush with the administrator, and the next time, there may not be a Patrick Cryne to bail us out and keep the club alive.

Nevertheless, if you have £100m tucked away in your back pocket, do not let my pessimism deter you. If you don't, then your ambitions are pie in the sky I'm afraid.

Another revealing interview, certainly seems Simon Davey not well liked by many. The whole sacking of Ritchie & Holden seems a major error.

 

It was not intended to be condescending or belittling. It was intended to be realistic. It is the type of question you must be willing to answer if you maintain the position that the club is operating the wrong policies. That it should be spending more of someone else's money. What I would love to see from you in reply is how the club could realistically pursue the sort of transfer policy that you advocate, because if you are not willing to do that, then the rest is just hot air. Sorry!

I haven't got an issue with the budget we work on. Communication with the fans & the decision to sign lots of young, untried players, without having a couple of senior pros around them I do question & I think Dale alluded to it in the interview.

 

He did, but his job was to try to get results, not manage the club within both a short term budget (1 season) and a long term budget. Those jobs are not controlled by the same persons, and that is deliberate. It is much easier to get results if you are allowed to spend the earth. The problem is that the club is soon in financial difficulty. It is a balancing act, one that is not easy to achieve. That is why so few football teams are making money and winning games.

 

Fave interview so far which I didn't expect to be honest. Dale seems like a top bloke. Really admired his honesty. Another lad that has been shafted by our club. Gutted he couldnt stay with us and hope he returns when we inevitably lose our current owners.

 

Great interview, I recommend it highly.

Dale refers to his team-mates and others at the Club by their nickname and at times I wasn't sure who he was referring to -

DT referred to most of the players and others linked to the club by their nickname - with quite a few names I had a problem working out who he was referring to - e.g. Davers - Chops.
Perhaps future interviewees could give players full name when they refer to them and then the players a.k.a. name ?

 

Another excellent stream. Thanks once again for your efforts Ben. I was impressed with
Dales openness and honesty. It didn't surprise me in the least to hear his views on Simon
Davey. I don't know what it was, but there was something about him that didn't quite ring
true re- unlike Big Mick, Andy Ritchie etc he didn't quite appear to be " one of ours."

Really looking forward to hearing and seeing Brendan O'Connell and Darren Barnard, two
of the all time favourites ever to don the famous Red shirt. Thanks again and please

Davvers was Goalkeeper Adam Davies and Chops presumably Michael Chopra.

 

Can't be sure but I assumed Davvers to be Devaney.

Made me smile when he was talking about Trevor Kettle when he said
" he looked at me and thought I was going to roor". A good old Yorkshire
word if ever there was one.?

 

Top interview again, I’m loving hearing what ex players/coaches really think when they’re not having to be quite as guarded, I never liked Simon Davey, there was just something about him that I couldn’t take to and it seems I wasn’t the only one but I didn’t like Paul Hart either but these interviews are showing that he was well liked amongst the players, looks like I got that one wrong...thanks once again to Ben and Gally, Sterling job lads
