The more you have the more you want. That's how it works, isn't it? I know what you are saying but the fact is even if he doesn't last very long at Leeds you can bet he'll come out of it significantly richer.
They’d either put you on gardening leave or you agree a package. They are still paying at least 2 ex managers.
If someone on a few hundred ground per annum does not have a secure future I'd hate to see where that leaves the rest of us.
He'll be able to pay off his mortgage, fund all his kids through Uni, help them onto the property ladder and have enough for when he gets the boot from Leeds. Most of us would do the same - hell, if Leeds Utd doubled my salary I'd be up there with Hecky!
Maybe. I've no axe to grind either way on this other than accepting that if the Leeds offer gives him the option of a more secure financial future he'd be a fool to turn it down.
He wants more money. He wants to be even richer. That's true. So let's say that instead of trying to say it's vital for his family and he needs the money.
None of us know about his finances. What we do know is that he played mainly in league one & two & whilst he had a decent career he would’ve never earned big money. He’s had a house built recently in Barnsley, if he’d have taken certain jobs he’d have had to sell up & move away. He’s got 4 daughters who are all in local schools. At Barnsley although he’s titled ‘head coach’ he ends up doing more than most managers have to in terms of workload, him & Clapham are stretched to the limit constantly having to coach young players. Although he’s now got a longer commute he’ll be a genuine head coach at Leeds, he’ll also have more players who don’t need as much coaching. I wouldn’t be surprised if his working day shortened by going there. And if he gets right at Leeds he manages in the premier league. If he gets it right at Barnsley we’ll be mid table at best. I’d say going there makes sense on a personal, financial & sporting level. I just wish it wasn’t Leeds
Didn't say he couldn't. Put yourself in his shoes - would you go? He'll earn more there in 12 months than three years with us.
It's irrelevant. It's about his hopes, his family, and his ambitions. If he does well at Leeds he'll earn more/ move up, possibly be considered for England role. If he doesn't do well, he still has chances in the game, and has a secured future for his family and his retirement.
£100k translates to £1,265 net. A very good wage for most including me, but not in the mad world of football.
I like him but until he leaves that place I hope he fails miserably. The last young manager we sent up the M1 did a good job of relegating Leeds.
I see the Leeds fans are retweeting a clip of his recent iPlayer interview when he talked about hating Leeds as a youngster
It will be interesting to see how long it takes the new board to appoint a replacement. If it is quick then the conspiracy theorists heads will be spinning
I'm not for a minute suggesting he's destitute, but being a football manager (well paid tho it is) doesn't afford the same long term security as other well-paid jobs e.g. in finance, legal profession, doctor. Fixed term positions, spending more time out of work than in work, it's not quite the same thing as a permanent position at the same pay level.
Opens plenty of other doors though through contacts. I bet most people in the game have friends who will throw them a bone if needs be.
