Would absolutely love this but no chance. Maybe in a couple of years.

This definitely means Conor is coming home. YT is just trying to lower expectations so we're all even happier when it happens.

As an older fan of the club & excluding managers, unless they played a significant number of games, (i.e. that excludes two of our greatest managers in Clarke & Hunter)

    Best players in my lifetime:

    Glavin
    McCarthy
    Hourihane
    Futcher
    Shipperley

Probably a bit controversial, as it is meant to trigger discourse. Discuss.

I'm too young to have seen Glavin and McCarthy play for us (though I saw McCarthy play for Millwall against us).

I'd definitely go with Futcher. If there's a better centre half who was never capped by England I'm struggling to think who it might be. The fact that he spent most of his career playing in the second tier is just ludicrous. As for the others - I'd definitely take Ward over Shipperley. Hourihane is up there, but he's got very stiff competition in Redfearn and Hignett. I'd also have David Watson, as in my opinion he's the only Barnsley player I've seen who was genuinely world class on a regular basis.

It's all opinions. I would agree with all 3 you mentioned, although would say Shipperley was a better footballer than Ward, if not quite as mobile or, (surprisingly for a big guy), good in the air. I think you see the value of a player when you lose them & the loss of Hourihane that season speaks for itself. Matty James came in & did a sterling job, but has not got the dead ball skills of Hourihane. I'm sure a top flight club will take him on loan. Sheff Utd maybe?

I was only a kid for the promotion & prem seasons but wouldn’t Redfearn be above Hourihane? I loved Hourihane but it seemed to me like Redfearn did similar things to Hourihane but a division higher.

It’s a close run thing, both the heartbeat of the team. Hourihane perhaps marginally more technically gifted but redders probably galvanised the team more. His shooting from outside the box was ridiculous. Redders did it for us on the premier league, so edges it.

Both are allegedly on £30k a week at their parent clubs, we allegedly were paying James £10K a week.
Key would be how much Villa are willing to subsidise his wages.
