Unfortunately, based on performances so far, Shepherd isn't at League 1 level at all. He dithers on the ball, he's all one foot, he's played numerous stray passes to opposition players and his positioning a lot of the time is woeful.

Earl has been poor after the first three games he played for us.

Good teams that challenge always have a strong base to build from. We have a good keeper, a good midfield and a good strike force, albeit threadbare. Our defence is absolutely terrible.

Getting a strong, commanding, calming influence at the back is essential if we're to have anything like a good season.

A dodgy defence cripples the whole team. Obviously there's the goals that we concede, that goes without saying really. But it's the other effects it has. The palpable tension in the ground when the defenders have the ball at their feet outside their own box for example. Another aspect would be that it effects the mindset of the midfielders. Are they going to play that risky ball forward if they lose it and our defence is going to be run at? Perhaps they'll think twice meaning that we play more tentatively going forward?

Hopefully a much better all round performance Tuesday and we can cheer up a bit, fingers crossed.
