That was.my experience as well. There must have been 50,000 on Wembley Way who'd been there all day and were p1ssed as farts. The stewarding and policing were virtually non existent and the Covid checks were a joke. However, once we were inside it was incredible and reminiscent of the atmosphere at a rock concert. We were in the top tier behind the Italians and were stood up all match. There was a family behind us who were wearing Italy shirts but who were actually Scottish. They thought the atmosphere was incredible and felt safe even though they were in the midst of England fans. I actually saw a bunch of idiots outside open up a barrier near the press entrance and about 50 were running up steps. No idea if they managed to get in but there were no police around for about 5 minutes before the cavalry arrived. Outside it felt like the Cardiff fans prior to the semi whereas inside was more like a cross between the Ipswich match and a Springsteen gig
I was 70/30 Club/country, I'm now 90/10 - I just CBA with all the baggage SOME England fans bring with them and therefore make it embarrassing for the rest of us. Its not the players fault or the manager, just the thicko "2 world wars" brigade, I'd never go to an England game again unless it was somewhere like Japan which would filter out all the knuckle draggers, going to be interesting next Winter for the world cup, the kind of "banter" England fans enjoy will go down like a lead balloon there. If the flights are cheap enough we could get rid of our hooligan problem once and for all!!
It was incredible in Wembley. I'm growing increasingly frustrated at the video that the usual media types on Twitter shared with comments about England fans fighting each other and the Asian kid on the floor. Whilst I don't condone violence ever, it was England fans kicking and throwing out the fans who were trying to get in for free through Gate C10 (wherever that was). Some people tried to say the shouts of 'Get Out' were racially motivated, but they were literally handing him over to the stewards to be thrown out. Have there been any retractions? Not one. England fans with tickets didn't bring any shame on their country on Sunday night.
These are pretty much my thoughts. The opportunity England had feels like a once in a generation one. They won't get a much better chance, playing all but one of their games at home and benefiting from such a kind draw. I felt similar about Barnsley as well. We seemed to relish the leveller of empty stadiums, the 5 substitute rule suited our pressing style and Ismael was an absolute inspiration as manager. I fear that next season will be one of struggle again, especially after losing so many key employees at the planning stage.
It’s depressing isn’t it mate. Seen so many wonderful videos online of such a diverse supporter group that England now has. Groups of people in mosques sat around watching the England matches and similar from many different communities. This tournament was a fantastic opportunity to bring the country together, win or lose, but the Neanderthals have instead set us back 20 years.
In the immediate aftermath of the game I would have probably agreed mate. But I’m seeing enough of a response, like the Marcus Rashford mural today, that all is not lost on that front. It was on such a big stage the idiots can’t hide. When things like this happened 20/30 years ago I don’t believe the public opinion swung so aggressively against it. The public outrage and disdain wasn’t quite like this from my minimal memory. Also a big fan of how Tyrone Mings has been brave enough to throw the spotlight on politicians, and Harry Kane publicly disowned anyone involved in such a forthright manner.
