Of those fleeing the Middle East (mainly Syria, Iraq, Libya & Yemen), the vast majority stay in Lebanon & Turkey (~5.5 million). Those who travel onwards into Europe (~612000 last year including a lot from Venezuela) are usually those who have most to lose by staying where they are or the most to gain by moving onwards. Those that make the UK are the most determined of all (~44000 last year) for whatever reason. If it was the other way around and you had to flee the UK. Where would you go? Would you go to France or Spain, where you have no connections and can't speak the language, or would you head to Ireland, America or Australia where you have connections and can speak the language?
