He and Allen Bradbury were the first victims I recall of the tendency of our boo-boys to pick on young home-grown players. There have been several others over the years.
Glavin and Banks weren’t of my era although arguably two of the best midfielders we’ve ever had in the past I’d have to go: 1. Redfearn 2. Hammill 3. Hourihane 4. Hignett 5. Butterfield All match winners on their day
What about Danny Blanchflower? (if we're talking all-time best, way before my time but surely one of the best ever). Best in my time without any doubt, King Ronnie.
Sums him up well. One of the best value for money signings we ever made, think we paid 40k for him from Burnley? Him and Redfearn, plus Sheridan, were a cracking midfield and we put some good sides to the sword with them in the team. Two great finishes v Sheff Utd. Would run through brick walls for the team.
All those mentioned really, obviously Ronnie as the best. Just as outsiders for pure enjoyment I'd like to add, Alan Little and Gwn Thomas, the thump as they hit their opponents is a sound that newer fans will never enjoy
Pretty much what you said though I would also put Ray McHale in the mentions. Without him Banks and Glavin wouldn’t have looked quite as good.
I think Stuart Gray was a better player than Ian Banks myself, maybe not as exciting to watch. We need a historian on these 'best ever' threads. I wonder how good George Utley was who went to 2 FA Cup finals with Barnsley and played for England - kind of thing that is unimaginable now. Certainly the best over the last 50 years have been mentioned in this thread, though.
