We have had an embarrassment of riches at full back and centre back but often struggled further up the pitch.

Yes it was a 4-0 cup thrashing against a really dirty hoofballing Hudds team in 1995-96.
Their midfielders Darren Bullock and Andy Morrisson the following season just tried to kick the hell out of Martin Bullock & Clint Marcelle. Thats all they were good for in those days under Brian Horton, in their early days of playing at the new McAlpine stadium.
Andy Payton hit a really versatile hat trick for us that night (a left footer, a right footer, and a header), and who would have thought we'd sell him to them the following season and his career was never as good after that.

I didn't know he went back home to Burnsley, but I remember him flopping at Hudds where Marcus Stewart was the quality and Payton was just the clogger.

Thats good stats I agree, but were Burnsley in the lower leagues in those days.
I remember when he scored (the winning goal) for us there at the old Turf moor in 1994-95, he didn't celebrate as it was against his hometown club.

Didn't we get 60k each for Gorry and Otulakowski which was very decent money in those days? I think that cash kept the club afloat and we started to move upwards after that with a couple of promotion near misses before Clarkey took over.

Yeah my 'next to nowt' was a bit tongue in cheek following recent sales. £60k was an absolute fortune in those days (1976).

Unfortunately, I think he got a serious injury which ended his career without hardly featuring for the Toon.

I think you're right. He was on his way to being a very decent player I reckon but we are talking about a long, LONG time ago so maybe the specs are a bit rose tinted...or even sepia.
