It is. They do need to be more clear tho on what the cause is. I never even knew it raised money for charity and would have donated in the years I did go. A “clearer” stronger push via all social media channels and also on the day and I bet there’d be over £10k easily. It sounds as tho they need some help on that front.
Get volunteering, the more the merrier. I'll say it again, I use Eyup & Downs huge reach to push Barnsley Live every year and this year pushed the BFC/YAA link with a video of the helicopter landing at Oakwell which went viral and was viewed 124,000 times with a link to the fundraiser. I know not everyone's on Facebook/twitter but with a close to zero pound advertising budget we all do our best. There's 200 bands, 30 ish venue, a wide range of stage sponsors and plenty of info to get out to the masses so it's hard to just keep posting about the main sponsor because people would then be complaining stage slots etc weren't advertised enough. Encouraging the bands to mention it will be something I'll request next year. But, and it's a big but, just getting bands to respond to text messages, turn up on time and to bring the correct gear is a huge effort, so many of them need babysitting so adding something else to their requirements isn't as straight forward as it seems. Anyway thanks to everyone who chucked in some cash.
I mentioned this to them on their Facebook page a few weeks ago and was ridiculed, as have a few more been.
Splendid news. Well done to all involved! Let’s hope the event continues to go from strength to strength and 2026’s chosen charity receives even more than this wonderful, record total.
It seems likely that as stated by many that the problem is with the chosen charity fund raising not being managed well within the event agenda. People seem, based on the response, very willing to donate. Now some learning for next year and maybe break the 10k mark.
I think people think that the purpose of Barnsley Live is for people to listen to music, be introduced to new bands and support pubs and that it also kindly chooses to collect for a specific charity. Basically like how BFC has charity takeover days - lots of people will donate to the charity but plenty will just be there for the football and won’t go out of their way to donate unless they see a bucket collector and happen to have change on them. It seems the purpose is actually specifically a charity drive and the music and such is the vehicle to prompt donations. Somewhere along the way that messaging has fallen down. It definitely gives off the vibe as a music event that collects for charity, not a charity event that plays music.
i fully agree. I think they can achieve both objectives successfully with a little more awareness, planning and execution. I dont know what went into the charity planning but by their own messaging it led to a disappointing result. I dont know if the amount raised was good or bad but clearly they had higher expectations which have since been met. The positives are more money was raised through this transparency and there is now lots to learn from for next time.
