It was a very good win. Kane took his first goal extremely well. Typical Southgate caution though in that we almost shut up shop after four minutes and completely so after it went to 4-0. I was watching the RTE feed with Liam Brady, Didi Hamann and Damien Duff. All three went heavily for England to win before kick off but were bemused that we'd not pushed on to kill the game after the first goal and had yielded two or three half chances in the first half. I'm giving Southgate the benefit of the doubt for the total lack of enterprise due to his desire to save energy for the semi and because it was a hot night. I do, however, feel sorry for the likes of Bellingham and, especially Calvert-Lewin who came on for the last 20 and were given absolutely no licence to go and make an impact. I'd happily win the next two games playing the way we are but I suspect we're going to have to show a lot more enterprise than last night.
We've beaten Croatia (World Cup Finalists) Czech Republic (who knocked out The Dutch) Germany (who put 4 past Portugal) Ukraine (who admittedly weren't great but we battered them). I think we're a pretty good side.
Think you ought to have stopped after your first two sentences. The early goal forced Ukraine to adopt an attack mode and they played some decent stuff in the first half. The second goal effectively killed them off. The game was over after a hour, the only competition being them trying to get a consultation goal and us preserving our clean sheet. We won that one as well. If England had gone all out to win by 7 or 8 Southgate would have got a tonking for that as well and rightly so. Edit osted in response to @churtonred
I'd hardly call Ukraine's response attack mode. Neither am I saying we didn't play well but I do think we put the brakes almost completely on after we scored and better analysts than me thought so too. We got an early goal second half and that was that. At four nil I don't think Southgate would have got criticised for being just a little more expansive. We're a good side. All I'm saying is that from this point on we'll be playing sides who are also good and if we manage to get ahead then resort to a lack of further ambition we're asking for trouble.
