I haven't used my YouTube account for years. Somewhere along the line, it's got associated with an old gmail account, which I can't remember the password for. I've gone through the 'Forgot Password' procedure several times and input the verification codes which were sent to both my mobile and recovery email, yet at the end of it, all I get is a message saying it's been referred to a security specialist with the wording "Something seemed unusual about your recent request to sign in to this account. To keep it safe, it's been placed in a security hold. You'll get an update at xxxxx.xxxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx, usually within 3-5 days. Check your spam folder in case it goes there".

I then get the following reply after 3 days saying that they can't verify that I own my recovery email: "At Google, we take your privacy and security very seriously. We're committed to returning accounts only when we're sure that we're giving them back to their owners. Unfortunately, based on the information you provided, we were unable to verify that you own xxxxx.xxxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx". Hold on a minute. I'm supposed to be verifying that I own the gmail associated with my YouTube account, not the recovery email account!

What more can you do than pass all the verification they ask for? Has anyone else had this pallaver?
