One for the stattos - points / wins wise, is this lined up to be our worse season ever?

If there has been a worse one, it must have been bloody miserable.

In mine and I would expect most supporters lifetimes. Immediately after one of the best, when we couldn't attend. Absolute heartless ********.

@wolvestyke posted the history a few weeks back. From memory this will be probably the second worst but my memory is pretty poor.

The title of this thread needs to be on protest banners with an image of Conway.

Without the question mark as it's fairly conclusive.

Of course it is. We are below a team who started with a 21 point deduction. That stat alone is beyond tragic

1952/3 played 42 won 5 drawn 8. 18 points then which would be 23 points now.

Since being in the football league this will be our second worst season on record unless they win all three remaining games and surpass the 64/65 season.

Our admin squad under Gudjon had more fight in them and were full of free transfers.

How bad must Rotherham have been to only get 23 points.

Thanks for the nudge @Archerfield. I've not updated over the last 2/3 weeks as I didn't want to appear negative.

Now that our relegation is confirmed it really doesn't matter does it? And it's difficult to argue anything other than that this has been one of the worst seasons in our history. So here goes:

1952/53 was our record breaking bad season in terms of points gained, number of wins, goals conceded and number of defeats. Unsurprisingly we finished bottom of League Division Two (now the Championship) with a record of Played 42 Won 5 Drew 8 Lost 29 Goals For 47 Goals Against 108 Points 18 (it was two points for a win so adjusted for 3 points for a win would mean 23 points).
The worst season in terms of goals scored was 20 years later when we were relegated from League Division Three, scoring just 32 goals. Purely for interest, despite our difficulties scoring we nevertheless managed to win 9 games and drew 18.

Comparing this season with those two, we have obviously scraped one more win so far and even if we lost the last 3 games, could only end up losing 28. Styles' late goal last night was our 32nd of the season so we have matched the low in 1972. Goals conceded that year was 64 so a negative goal difference of -32. Currently we have scored 32 and conceded 62 this season too.

Going back to 1952/53, given it was a 42 game season, points per game was 0.547 (adjusted for 3 points). Currently we stand at 0.697 points per game this season and if we were to lose the last three games it would reduce to 0.652.

So in summary, in terms of results this season isn't as bad as 1952/53. However, it is likely to be the second worst and therefore historically bad. I can't comment on whether there were off the pitch issues like this season but there is perhaps a conversation to be had about whether all things considered, this is the worst and most damaging season in our history.

Edit: Following relegation in 1952/53, we enjoyed a good season the following season in League Division Three (North), finishing in 2nd place. And then in 54/55 were Division Three (North) Champions and promoted back to Division Two.

We won that game 2-1, with both our goals being scrambled efforts from Jimmy Seal at the Ponty End.

Didn’t Brian Arblaster get injured and have to play on, Lil? Or was that another game that season?

Seem to remember Notts County were at, or very near, the top.

I don't remember an issue with Arblaster in that game, old mate. Notts County were going for automatic promotion, under Jimmy Sirrel. They had players like Don Masson & Les Bradd in their line up.

@Lone Striker and @JLWBigLil - I didn't remember but have just consulted The Definitive Barnsley FC by Brian Dennis and Brian Arblaster didn't play, Gerry Stewart did. Arblaster doesn't appear to have made a single appearance despite being ever present the previous season and making 13 appearances the following season. K Barker started the season and was then replaced by Gerry Stewart for the rest of the season.
