My main concern is that we will NEVER improve the team as any players worth keeping will move on - even if, in some circumstances, the board don’t want to sell them at the exact point they want to move. The last head coaches have/are leaving due to their disbelief in the owners wanting to improve the team. So it is reasonable is it not, to believe that the players will feel the same way? Players in modern football generally hold the power and get their move if they want, it’s been reported that Jacob brown was insisting on his move, perhaps the board fancied him another year for his stock to raise a bit more? Who knows? Something has to be done to make Barnsley a place where players have at least SOME belief that they can be a part of something for at least a few seasons and they can showcase themselves in a team not getting beat every week and being odds on bottom 3, otherwise they will continue to jump at the very first chance they get in desperation just to get out. I feel we have had that a least to some extent previously- now not at all. It is the job of the leadership to instill this belief through themselves and the management they employ, they are clearly failing in instilling it in the management, and you have to assume this is passed down to the players. In addition to the above, will it also become the case we struggle to recruit the promising youngsters we have managed to do in the past that are so key to the philosophy we are following if we continue on the same course? The latest player we targeted turned us down, this may become a more frequent occurrence - what happens then?
believe me we used to ask that same question in the sixties when we were struggling in the bottom division, so the answer is massively yes we have moved on, big time, we might have hit a plateau at the moment, but just look what happened to the likes of ex local rivals like Chesterfield, York , Grimsby, and we really haven't done that bad. Now I'm not saying we should settle for mediocrity, we shouldn't , but there for the grace of god and all that
You’re right of course but we have to go on the here and now . I know some fans are wanting us to spend millions and compete for the Too positions etc but most of us just want us to compete on a match for match basis . In the real world we would be beating some top teams losing to some struggling teams but on a match for match basis . We looked a beaten side yesterday after the first twenty five minutes and penalty apart we wouldn’t have scored if we were still playing now. These players have proved that without the s top scorer there’s fight in them to get results . That wasn’t in evidence yesterday otherwise a nil nil was on the cards . Imho we didn’t set up to win that game yesterday and we made mistake after mistake through lack of conviction . All I ask and lots more is whatever division we’re in is to compete and at time’s to use our old mantra battle our way to points .
