We are seeing a lot of these in the garden. Any ideas?

Like small bees but can hover. They are not the usual summer hover flies which are like small wasps.

    I'd like to know too.

Because last 2 days I seem to have one that hovers, and dive bombs and attacks anything that dare go within 3 meter radius of it.

Never seen owt like it. It even hovered above the dog, and followed him a few feet as if being weary of attacking him.

    Weird

Plenty of wazzocks about at the moment, so it could be one of them. If it was having a party with its mates, it's definitely a wazzock.

We had a lot of hornets in the area last year.
They were even out in the dark. You hear one approaching from about 3 miles away, a bit like a Chinook helicopter.
Strangely though unless they are disturbed they do not bother with you. They are quite solitary. The ones in this country are the euro hornets, brown and yellow, and big buggers over an inch long.
The nasty ones that are destructive to our bees are the Asian hornets, black and yellow.

Have you noticed any tiny holes in your lawn?
My front garden is inundated with Mining Bees, very good for the garden, only sting if really threatened and the sting is very mild anyway.
Somehow Thatcher must have missed these:rolleyes:

I think we're all spending more time in the garden hence spotting different insects and birds. I'm mainly seeing the lesser spotted vino Blanco most evenings.

Did you get a picture of them? I used to see tits quite often but they seem to have gone south recently.
