Its now being reported that a vaccine is being trialled on volunteers this week and if successful could be heading for mass production in September.

Never did I want to be more wrong but I just don't believe it - even if it works it must take longer than 4 months to verify it and put in place the capability for mass production. I still dont see how we can have a generally available vaccine in 2020 - please come back and bump this if I turn out to be unduly pessimistic and its true

thats where the problem lays in the trialing if its not 100% or as near as dammit then the govt/firm are leaving themselves wide open to litigation and as we all know certain elements will be racing to the courthouse

Doctor just been on Calendar News, reckons it will be 12-18 months before we are
over the crisis. Didn't speculate on a timeline for a vaccine or the possible end of
    lockdown.

I agree - a safe vaccine in 4 months would be brilliant but it aint going to happen

google <how vaccines are tested, licensed and monitored> and you'll see what a long drawn out complex process it is.
(have posted this on a previous thread.)
The first step is to give the vaccine to a small group of volunteers - think this is what is happening in Oxford - if the vaccine doesn't prove to be lethal then work begins on testing/modifying it.

The question isn't is a vaccine effective the issue is the safety of the vaccine. Safe for 'vulnerable' people - safe for pregnant women - safe for people with other medical conditions etc.

I hope someone is looking at the possible usefulness of some of the 100's of drugs presently available to see if they might be effective in treating covid 19.

Not if a miracle happens and they find a vaccine.
These scientists are clever people probably cutting a lot corners but what the hell it,s an emergency.

No new drug will be licensed in this country until it has been shown to be safe and effective.
The process which involves blind/double blind trials, testing on animals will take a long time.
No one will be cutting corners emergency or not because no one can risk being sued if things go awry.

You answered a question I would ask people which is would they trust it enough to take if available in September as plenty wouldn't want something rushed in to a few months and they couldn't make a vaccine compulsory with people. I have read plenty about this and other similar trials. They will split the 510 volunteers aged 18-55 in to two groups. One will take a meningitis vaccine already available and the other the one created for Covid 19 but won't be told which they have been given. They will all be checked regularly over the coming months with the plan being that anyone that tests positive for Coronavirus will only come from the meningitis group.

After that they will have to test those over 55 and with underlying health conditions. They might need a double dose for the same working affect on their immune systems or it might not work at all (fingers crossed that's not the case). If it proves to work I suspect tens of millions not just a million will be ready when it's deemed safe. Production will be ramped up by any means necessary to get the country back to normal. Although it's been said by Oxford University that it's not a given the million doses will go to people in the UK first. I think they are worried about a humanitarian crisis if the 3rd world countries get it was bad as Europe have, as they would find trying to cope a big struggle.

MMR jabs are being looked at because they think it might be why kids aren't as affected. Blood plasma is being given to critical patience of those who have survived it. If that works they might think of trying to give everyone that before it gets to the symptoms stage. Vitamin D tablets too to see if sunshine protects you better from it. Head lice tablets is another trial and they are cheap too.

Like I said it,s an emergency they wouldn’t,t be even testing it on humans if it had not already been tested on animals.
Wait and see like you,ve said it normally takes years but miracles do happen.

Was asked today whether I want to volunteer. Seems Cambridge are part of it and they’ve chosen my doctors. I said yes!

It's the long term testing that is the issue. But hopefully the boffins have answer for this. Can't imagine funding will be a issue so let's hope for the best.

They won't test a vaccine on someone who has had or currently has the virus.

All I know at this moment Jay is that they’ve been asked if they will take part in a drug trial.at home. I will endeavour to find out exactly why or what. ( unless they cannot disclose. Although id be surprised at that) A vaccine wasn’t on the agenda mate I believe.
Not sure about Cambridge tyke whether it a drug trial or some sort of vaccine.

Check them regularly and hope that it never comes back as positive or we are screwed.

So they deliberately expose you to the virus and see what happens basically.

Treatment of symptoms is the key, I totally agree & have made this point a number of times. If you can treat people that need ICU treatment with a drug that stops the need for a ventilator in 90% of cases, you can pretty much consign this to being a regular flu.
