"Toney's penalty record is remarkable - scoring 25 of his 26 career efforts. His only failure has been in Peterborough's 4-0 League One defeat by Barnsley in 2018 when Adam Davies saved his kick."
Commentators on about him going to the world Cup but if that's the case I can't understand why he didn't kick a ball when he was in the squad for the nations league games.
He'll definitely go, however Southgate has a tendency to play with either 1 up front, or a front 3 with 2 out wide. So Harry Kane (understandably) occupies that number 9 slot. And you can't see Kane being dropped unless he's injured. Even if Kane's form goes off a cliff, he's still the first name on the team sheet for England.
But not to give him any minutes on the pitch? He's not even played in European games. Don't get me wrong, he deserves to have his chance but its a massive step up from the games he's played in so far without even a 10.minute run out in an international.
I guess that's one of the issues with the nations league as opposed to friendlies, Southgate probably didn't want to experiment with England's status as a 'group A' team being at stake. That said, the Germany game was a dead rubber, so Toney could have played some part in that surely.
He’ll perhaps be brought on towards the end of a match that is heading for penalty shootout. Just to guarantee we score at least one.
That was a great day out despite the rain and being stuck in a stand that makes our west stand look like part of the Emirates. Steve Evans got chants all afternoon.
Toney should go but I wouldn’t bank on it. Southgate will need to get his full quota of full backs and defensive midfielders in first.
Same way he hasn’t given Ben White any minutes in the build up, but he should be going, and starting!!! Think Southgate has caught the same timid strategy that seems to afflict all England managers of picking “tried and tested” players who don’t perform (not including Kane in that more Maguire)
