That formation is horrible to watch. Too negative. I really think we paid too much respect to Villa. Focussed on their game, not ours. Poor Bradshaw having to play up top for long periods of the game without anyone within 20 yards of him. We looked alot better when we went with Winnall and Armstrong. Way too many passes astray, too. That said, Sam looked more like his old self, Roberts and MacDonald looked good, and you just can't fault the team spirit. But please, Hecky, don't start tinkering with crap formations.
We looked very poor at the start of the scone half with a formation set up not to lose once we ditched that and and back to actually trying to win the game we were much better.
He's learning every day though, fair play to him for trying to change things up after the last couple of games
Correct. He ruined Bradshaw tonight with that formation. Don't know what Hecky was thinking to be honest. Defiantly got out of jail tonight
We did very well to get something out of it. We were hanging on for long periods and the stats like shots on target tells the story. Had we lost three in a row nobody could have really complained. Get Watkins back up front and play Morsy or Scowen not both. Felt for Bradshaw getting zero support all night and then when he went off we changed it so if he'd have stayed on he'd have finally got the support he was wanting earlier. Kpekawa looks more like a centre half with his frame and struggled against his man until he seemed to get a second wind for the last 15 minutes or so.
How do you know Villa wouldn't have hammered us if we had played 442? Sure we looked better later on but they were defending a one goal lead by then and weren't committing men forward.
Can't agree with some of the analysis on here. Fairly even first half which we probably edged. Beginning of second half we started well - we were all over them for about ten mins. Then clearly we had a dodgy ten minute spell where they were on top. This was caused by our own mistakes, but also slight decrease in energy levels of Bradshaw and Watkins. Think only thing Hecky got wrong was not making subs at around 55mins - definitely needed that extra energy on. Definitely don't agree that we could have had no complaints if we'd have lost. Makes it sound like Villa battered us - I thought for the most part we gave as good as we got - albeit we didn't quite create as many clear cut chances as usual.
I think Hecky was justified in starting with 4-4-1-1 considering that both Reading and Brighton went through our midfield like a dose of salts . We certainly had more of an attacking threat with 4-4-2 later on but it also left us wide open on the counter . We're not playing the likes of Rochdale or Sheff Utd any more so I can understand his conservatism . I'll take a 1-1 against a team worth 70m any day of the week .
The 70m argument doesn't work when its a 70m team that's been struggling to put a result together all season. Can't blame Hecky for trying something different now and again if he thinks he needs to tighten it up a bit just think its better on an away match, personally I prefer it when we go toe to toe with teams and last night would definitely have been a night I would have gone with that to try and shatter what must have been fragile confidence.
Villa never sat back and tried to defend the 1-0 plenty of attacking intent for the whole game, once they finally 'click' they'll be a real force.
4141 that was all day for me. Got out of jail going 442. I understand the argument about villa would have ran through us but who knows had we started 442 they'd be more on back foot
How did he ruin Bradshaw? Bradshaw has played more or less exactly the same everytime he's started. And he's mainly started 4-4-2 with Watkins. It wasn't long ago people were saying Bradshaw should be dropped for Payne.
Difficult to say whether it was the right or wrong formation, but we got a point in the end. Personally, I thought the extra midfielder stifled Conor. Morsy was the one dropping deep to get the ball from the back four, something Hourihane usually does, and a lot more effectively. We lacked pace to hit them on the break, and Bradshaw was too isolated up top to be effective.
