The whole point of a minute's applause...

    Was because it's very difficult to adhere to a minute's silence in a packed football stadium. People entering the ground aren't necessarily aware it's taking place so may appear disrespectful without meaning to.

    In an empty ground it makes no sense. A minute's silence would have been perfect.

    Totally agree .
    The minutes silence could be turned farcical and spoiled by three or four people in a twenty thousand crowd otherwise respectful crowd do a minutes applause was the perfect answer.
    With no fans and only players and staff it made sense to have a minutes silence .
