Is that, having listened to Collins interviews with the Barnsley Chronicle, Radio Sheffield and other media outlets, is that Collins has taken no responsibility whatsoever for us failing to win and being incredibly lucky not to lose today. He must see that the totally inept last 30 minutes performance that we saw was solely down to his substitutions
As much as I’m fully behind Collins and believe we’ll get top six, today’s performance was poor. We’ve gone from looking like a top two side on Friday to a poor side today. I thought the first half was decent but second half was inept. If Magennis wasn’t such a donkey, they would have been 2-1 up before they equalised anyways.
I lost count of the times Calum Cooper said "Wake up call" on the iFollow commentary and each time we failed to wake up.
Yes I think he did and to be fair, Watters made one decent forward run which led to nothing. Personally, I don't think Watters offers much at all.
TBF, the players shouldn't be listening to the commentary. Although some of them might be judging on performance...
One thing that watters has is pace. He is rapid when he gets going but he just never gets into any positions where he can use it. There might be a player in there somewhere but just don’t see what he offers coming on in a game like that yesterday
I was sat near Collins yesterday. When Jordan Williams fluffed his clearance which almost resulted in them scoring he said and I quote "he's crap, absolute crap"
He doesn’t read the game does he? His anticipation is terrible. Never seems to work out how the ball is going to bounce or where the next pass is going.
If this is true (and he was referring to JW and not the donkey who missed the chance for Wigan), then I’m not sure I can applaud him saying such things out loud about his captain - but I can’t argue with his assessment and conclusion in all fairness. If true, it does beg the question why he keeps selecting him as a centre back though. We can all see Lopata isn’t quick as the obvious option - and the potential issues of having the back three as him, Mael and McCart as none of them are exactly rapid - but would it have been any worse than persevering with a lad clearly struggling hugely - especially when the lads playing right wing back are pretty below par aswell? I sincerely hope we’ve brought someone in by the next game; I don’t want to see JW at centre back again unless in an emergency.
He does, he's rapid once he gets going but I think he lacks a bit of agility and acceleration which makes him look slower than he is.
Why is it always down to the manager though. This was the same team who for long spells out played Peterborough the other night. The performance wasn't too good before he made the subs so I don't agree about his substitutions being soley the reason for not winning. Just prior to their equalizer we had a 4 on 2 situation which we messed up with a poor pass/decision,can the coach be blamed for that? At Peterborough the midfield constantly drove at the home side midfield causing all sorts of problems for them,New Years Day we didn't and it was too tippy tappy.Do we blame the coach for that or Wigans organisation which made it difficult to penetrate them. Theres lots of factors to consider during a game and not all are down to the coach.Players have got to take responsibilty when they're on the pitch and be more consistant when making choices and by a by this season they have.
That’s quite polite - you should hear some of the lower league managers during games It’s part of the game - just you can’t hear it as much at higher league games due to the crowd.
Agree with this. The performances - good or bad, are there to be seen. But it’s not 100% the coach every time. Step over that white line, and there’s not always a lot a manager can do. As much as I can’t stand Rooney, he was right when he said it was the players who need to have some self-pride in their performances. As for the subs - we’ll see during this window if changes are made to the squad. Cosgrove, Watters and Jalo are all currently offering nothing at the moment (Jalo to be expected).
It's time the club acted to bring in a decent centre-back type defender (maybe a half season loan), to free Williams up to play in his best position at wing-back. It's glaringly obvious that's he's not performing well in the back 3 and it's not like we're overly blessed with talent at right wing-back.
