Much as I prefer test cricket, I've softened to the idea of the short-form game, and I think the school holidays timing and double-headers are sound approaches for widening the audience, but this format is just nonsense, isn't it? Such a shame they didn't just put on a decent T20 tournament instead.

Edit: AND ANOTHER THING! Why do they just say out or not out on Hawkeye reviews, rather than giving the details as to why, e.g. impact outside the line? Do they think they'll get more people into the game if they don't have to get into the ins and outs (!) of the rules?

How can we have a game at Headingley where Jonny Bairstow is captain of the opposing team?

    Just seems very wrong.

Yeah, that does feel weird, but then we have English footballers playing against English teams at club level, for example, and that kind of anomaly is inevitable in an open franchise system, whatever the format. Unless it's based on the county teams, of course, but franchise does seem to be where it's at.

It does seem it's difference for the sake of been different. The short format and the double headers make perfect sense as you said. Maybe what does 40 balls add 7 overs ish 30/40 minutes extra to a 20/20 game. Pushing it to 10 o'clock finish if you start at the same time could be a little late by the time people get home with young uns.

It's a good point re: finishing time, @In4reds, but I even think a T10 tournament would be preferable to this.

Why do we need a different format of cricket ?
    Simple question

The 5-ball overs and only changing ends every 2 overs is a load tosh. 16 6-ball overs each would be 96 each. I think that would solve the time issue and yet keep the structure more recognisable. I dislike the hundred but my 15-year-old is mad for it. Which I suppose is what they're after.

it was the only way of introducing franchise cricket to the UK.

its ***** but who am I … the kids seem to enjoy it and the ECB will make a few quid.

It will probably end up as a T20 in a couple of years as the franchises get bought up,

Our national game. The Hundred has been a roaring success and raised hundreds of millions that will help every county for years to come.

Game 1 between Spirit and Invincibles for the afternoon women's game was the highest attendance in Hundred history, well over 15k.

    So is T20!.
That recent series between us and India, shows how good test (and county) cricket can be.
Its what the game is all about.

Love limited overs cricket. (Tests have become far more entertaining over the last few yrs. Some may not agree given how it's approached. But don't forget, imo the players prefer it. Which is good enough for me, it brings the crowds in)
But i can't take to this 100 malarky. as I don't feel connected to the superchargers. Bairstow for another team doesn't sit well either.
Although unlike the the op. I like Hawkeye and it's explanations. it removes the element of doubt. In most cases. I often shout at the tele. That's a crap decision. But invariably the umpires get it right. If they don't it's corrected.

The Hundred is a rewrite of T20 but with the jumble of teams , Were playing all the right players but not necessarily in the right order"..Not different enough for me.

Yep, 15k, of which 14k were free for kids in Summer Holidays and Kellogs competition winners.

That wasn't my point, @Hooky feller. In The Hundred they don't give the explanations for the Hawkeye decisions, just In or Out. I think they should explain why, like they do in other formats.

Big Bash and IPL are successful without any major changes to T20 rules
