Was against Brighton. I wasn't allowed to attend midweek games at the time, so I missed our first home win of the season against Torquay. However, on Saturday 28th September 1968, we beat Brighton 4-0. All the goals were scored in the second half at the Spion Kop end. Unfortunately, I can only remember the fourth scored by David Booth. He sent in a cross from the left wing and it sailed over the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1968_1969/28/sep/index.shtml The last time I visited Brighton to watch Barnsley was 13th January 1990. They played at the Goldstone Ground in those days and the place was a wreck. The terracing was crumbling, all the paint was peeling off and there was no atmosphere whatsoever from the home fans. Mel Machin had been appointed manager a fortnight earlier and a teenager called Gerry Taggart was making his league debut for us. Not only that but he scored from a Steve Agnew corner. The only blot on his first appearance was as the game went into injury time with us still leading 1-0. A mix up between Taggart & Clive Baker allowed one of their players to equalise with their only worthwhile effort on target for the entire match. It felt more like a defeat than a draw. But the only topic of conversation on the long trip home was of our new star defender. http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1989_1990/13/jan/index.shtml Nostalgia agogo.
Yep that was one of my first games anall. I remember Dave Booth playing and thinking that we wont hold onto him for too long!! Good player.
Vaguely remember him hitting a long distance shot and nearly breaking the crossbar with it. No idea who against though.
I know we sold him to Grimsby for a stupidly low fee but cant remember when (i'm getting old!!). Did he stay at Grimsby for the rest of his career??
1972, after we'd been relegated to the Fourth Division. He stayed with them for the rest of his career and became manager about ten years later.
On of the few players I actually really remember playing the first time I saw us play. I was in the West Upper block E so looking right down on our left back when we were defending the ponty. I can still picture him now. Remember us playing Brighton as I went to see them as an early 8th Birthday present 1970/71 season - 2 days before my actual birthday. Didnt see many games that season but the season after I started going regularly
Yes but look on the bright side when we first started going we really werent very good - If you happily went through the 70's pre Clarke you will never be totally dejected with anything else you saw since. ( possible exception of the Parkin Hodges era in Admin )
Very true. That's why we appreciate & enjoy the good times, like now, as they never last as long as we'd like.
