The clubs history for us to be balloted out of top flight, stay in the second division on goal average, miss out on play-offs in 94/95 and get **** refs all the time culminating in Lama heads three match ban. Using non official match footage after it was missed by matchday officials and official report. Why do the authorities treat us with the same disdain as Leeds and Millwall even though as a club we've seemingly done nowt wrong?
My theory is before The Great War the club was rising in profile after it's cup exploits and some bigwhig at the F.A met with Barnsley F.C's heirarchy and told them of restructuring and offered the club a place in the First division if it parted with the necessary funds. Honest Barnsley doing things proper told em' to do one and the rest is Arsenal.
The incident in 1919 whereby we were passed up for promotion to the First Division in deference to the Arsenal was a monumental injustice. Several theories abound, but there appears to be little doubt that influence and bribery played its part in equal measure. http://www.blog.woolwicharsenal.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/FL-Meeting-minutes.jpg
Why didn't we just double what Arsenal did? Or did the club just naively think nature will take it's course? Did we offer less? Did we offer nothing? Were we as tight and holier than though then as we are now?
I fail to comprehend why the football club back then didn't fathom how lucrative a place in the first division was when Chelsea never accepted a relegation? Were the people in charge such dense idealogists or inept? Why wasn't owt questioned unless we took a bung ourselves to stay down?
From what I've read from the past, the accusations were unproven and were made following the FA's decision to promote Arsenal. In effect, our directors hadn't realised initially that something was amiss and were probably confident our elevation was a mere formality. I've had to attend an FA tribunal in the past and as the process proceeds you begin to sense, that it's an " old boys" network where vested interest takes precedence over common sense and fair play.
I think it's common practice to use any available footage yes although I think what you're getting at is more along the lines of should it be investigated just because a sky commentator mentions it? In which case no I think that's bang out of order, it should be a case of either the referee thinking he may have missed something and so asking the fa to look at it or the opposition requesting a review of an incident not someone on sky who's opinion is in theory no more important than yours or mine.
We’ve always played with a straight bat, always hoping that the corrupt or the financially insolvent get punished. They rarely do and their misdemeanours are just a small footnote in history. Meanwhile, cutting our cloth accordingly has left us bottom of the Championship.
From what I've read from the past, the accusations were unproven and were made following the FA's decision to promote Arsenal. In effect, our directors hadn't realised initially that something was amiss and therefore there was no need to bribe anyone. Barnsley supporters of any age can rightly feel aggrieved, because quite clearly, although " unproven", it would appear that something illegal and definitely unfair, took place at that meeting. Endearing traits of most folks born and bred in Yorkshire are openness, loyalty and honesty. I don't believe our directors at the time were naive. Regarding the process over who should have been promoted it was quite clear, in that there was a was a league table showing each teams final placing and in fairness that should have been followed. Looking at the result of the ballot its significant that us, Wolves, Birmingham, Forest and Hull were Midlands and Northern based, but the delegates present along with forty unnamed " shareholders", put Arsenal and Spurs in the top two places. In short, "someone " greased a few palms and the rest as they say, is history.
So to those on here that think if the season isn’t finished. Placings should stand and we should be relegated cos it’s fair cos we weren’t good enough. NO IT ISNT. It would be a travesty of justice. So it has to be null and void or completed. Null and void my choice for the fact there are too many complications. Of which cannot be overcome beyond June 30th. ( players contracts)
Tottenham lost out more than we did. We weren't in 2nd place in the votes. Arsenal (Who were 6th in the Second Division) received 18 votes Tottenham (who finished bottom of the first division) we (3rd in the Div 2) got 5 Wolves (4th in Div 2) got 4 Forest (18th in Div 2!?!) got 3 Birmingham (5th in Div 2) for 2 and Hull (7th in Div 2) Got 1 vote.
Barnsley has always been Barnsley, be it the heroic 1912 cup winners, the post war greats, led by the Robledo brothers. the Clarke/ Hunter team, the promotion team or whatever. Best bit of being a Barnsley fan, is NOT being a Sheffield Wednesday fan. Lift your head, raise your shoulders & thank Patrick & the Rev Tiverton Preedy every day.
