First a player who has been on the field for two minutes, and then two inexperienced youngsters in that kind of atmosphere. All poor penalties. There goes Southgates knighthood!
Tha wot man, he'll have got a job for life now. World Cup semi final, Euros final. Hopefully go one better in next years World Cup
Give up. Finalists at a major. Such a great few weeks. Fantastic to see football with fans back and for this exciting England team go so close.
They weren't allowed to be exciting though Whitey. We shut up shop after 30 minutes. We have exciting players and a manager that won't allow them to do what they're capable of.
Sometimes your plans go out of the window when you can't get the ball. Nothing to criticize, Southgate did everything right just outgunned on the night
I do wonder about the practice of bringing on players to take penalties towards the end of extra time. How often do they miss their spot kicks? Maybe just anecdotal on my part but they do seem to miss more than they score. Eg Scowen at Fleetwood.
They’ve done well no doubt but by Christ they were 3 awful penalties. Sancho and Saka made it easy for their keeper. Either put it down the middle or in the side netting. If you get it inbetween the two then you’re asking for trouble. Either way they’re a great bunch and the futures bright, but this hurts. It hurts a lot.
Again, don't want to comment in every thread saying the same thing, but we have been immense. We didn't sky a penalty they were all well saved by the keeper. I've nothing but praise for Southgate and all the team.
We have a manager that has taken us to a World Cup semi final and EURO final back to back. I see real progression and I’ve been excited watching it. Do I think we allowed Italy to take the initiative second half? Yes, absolutely. I was shouting at the TV. Saw it all happening in front of me. They’ll learn from this. Gareth included. I’m proud of them. No interest in dissecting it. Just add it to the list of heartbreak. When we finally win something, it’ll be so good. Just hope I’m not too old that I can’t celebrate accordingly!
I remember some years ago seeing a graphic of all WC penalty kicks and where they went and if they went in or not. The most common place for them to be saved was in the spot where our two were, that's well inside the post to the keeper's left. IMO the truly 'good penalties' are the ones hit with pace, like Kane's. Those players rolling them in are ultimately banking on the keeper going the wrong way. Still, no matter it's only a game...
This. No criticism of Southgate, I’ve no doubt Sancho and Rashford were well up for it, but I don’t agree with bringing players on purely for penalties. Good effort from them all though. Enjoyed watching England again.
I think Southgate has done very well with the team, I thought he wasn't fit for the job and he's proved me wrong. But at the same time it's ******* awful management to put your captain and most experienced pen taker up first when there's no pressure and leave the fifth to a 19 year old.
Well put this is where my frustration is, I think it everytime i watch any shoot out, why do the players insist on trying to roll them in. Even Messi has missed a load if pens that way. Maybe I'm just looking at it too simply and if they hit it harder it'll just go over the bar?
I think they back themselves to read the keeper's body language. Personally I'd smash it, but I'm not as confident as them. If Rashford, Sancho and Sako cooly roll the ball into the goal we laud their bottle.
Fair point though I often comment that's a poor pen the he's lucky the keeper went the wrong way. Perhaps I'm just a old fashioned pessimist
Same thing happened in the world cup semi against Croatia England scored early then surrendered the initiative. Southgate didn't react that night and didn't react again tonight yes he's got them to the world cup semi and a euro final but in both matches in my opinion his over cautious approach and slowness to react as cost us dearly. Yes England have done well but could the manage have done more ?
