I think we forget at times, just how porous our defence was at the end of Stendel’s reign. It was a embarrassing. I don’t fully blame him for it, but he must take some of it, as he was the coach. We could score though, never really a big issue. Struber came in, and turned it the other way quite impressively. Very tight unit usually which doesn’t concede as easily. As we know, the problem here is that we’ve sacrificed our attacking prowess and now struggle to score. We’re strong off the ball, are usually confident on it. But we lack that final 3rd cutting edge. A striker helps, but we have natural finishers at the club already. So I ask, which 2 positions need adding to, to improve our attack (without affecting our defence), and which 2 players do you realistically think we should sign for them 2 positions. Realistic in fees, wages and would actually come to us. Any ideas!?!?
Firstly, a thirty year old, experienced, strong in the tackle, defensive minded midfielder. Someone who can play alongside Styles and allow us to put Mowatt in the hole, freeing up our attack to work around each other a little more. Secondly, a target man to change the mode of attack - doesn't necessarily need to be massive, Jon Macken would be good!
Can a 30 year old keep up the pressing rate though. Got to be fit. I don’t disagree about the Mowatt idea though. I’d be half tempted to get Brad Potts back from PNE. Great engine, pace, height and drives forward.
Matty James would be perfect. Good point about the need for an engine, but Potts would have that if he doesn't quite have the captaincy material/experience. I think it's just frustrating that so many of us can see this is what's needed but yet there's nothing coming from the board.
The warning sign was there in the close season when Murphy described Mowatt and Woodrow as veterans. They’re only 25! Both would benefit from a Sollbauer type signing alongside them, just as Mads did.
