Courtesy of Stuart Watson on twitter. I've not fact checked them, just posting as a discussion point. Any of them you would have preferred us to sign instead? Any comments on any of the fees? If Middlesborough has signed Fletcher for £7m then you'd hope they'd have some goals this season with the money they've spent on strikers alone.
I'd have liked us to push the boat out and tried for Ollie Watkins. Perhaps we did. He'd be the type of signing we would be looking at and would represent the necessary next step of the apparent plan... that being an up and coming player of a higher calibre to reflect our Championship status and healthier bank balance. No one else really stands out to be honest, not realistically anyway. James Vaughan is a decent player but Sunderland will have offered way higher wages. Barrie McKay maybe would have been a shout. The difficulty is, even on that list with all the money being thrown about, there's only about 5 players who will guarantee goals. There are a lot of average strikers there who will get a few, work hard, but really aren't that special. We're up against it hugely when trying to recruit. That's why it's so galling when we can't get the ridiculous market rate for a Sam Winnall or Marley Watkins. Gold dust are goalscorers nowadays. I reckon every half decent striker in the bottom two divisions has now been suggested on here and variously judged as not good enough or potentially too expensive. Not a clue who we could get now.
Let's face it. The only strikers we will be signing now are loans. That's why they are happening late.
speaking of james vaughan, i was surprised to see his former huddersfield strike partner jermaine beckford end up at lg one strugglers bury. has anybody thought of bringing chris o'greedy back on loan like burton did with him last season.
Bloody hell. Middlesbrough will have paid out £31m if the sign Fletcher on 3 strikers? Glad to see parachute payments are being used to support the inflated wages of the premierleague that clubs can be left with, rather than simply buying their way back to the money pit.
Sums up my thoughts. I think the European market is the only one left for us other than loaning the latest 4 year old megastar from Man U.
Yeah it's a joke. Wrote an article on it years back after Keith Hill's comments on Blackburn signing Rhodes; it's only got worse. A lot worse.
