I've been watching the British Open Final highlights today/tonight, and I'm really pleased that Williams has won it, against the always unlikeable so called 'jester' Mark Selby!. People keep making an issue out of Williams' age, and talking about him as a sort of dinosaur now at the age of 48. But I say great credit to him because at times he can be an absolute genius with the pots he makes (and the fact that he's left handed like me, means a heck of a lot more lol).
And hey, what do we think about this top 10 best of all time countdown ?. I think it needs to be re-done lol.
Ronnie O’Sullivan is 47 , so it’s not that unusual. In fact in the not so recent past I would say it was the norm.
I dont think age is the factor they make out. I just think it's an excuse they use when they start losing more than they win. The likes of Parrott, Hendry, Davis and Doherty weren't beaten by age. They just weren't as good as they used to be. They started doing TV and in Hendry's case talking to other players. It softened him up. Parrott saw a foot in the door with the horse racing, question of sport etc. Doherty saw what Parrott did. They'd made their money n' done their winning.
I guess it's not so much age, but a desire to keep practicing and playing. Particularly with the likes of Henry and Davis who have multiple world titles. I once saw an interview with Ken Doherty, and he talked about he began to suffer with mental fatigue playing the longer matches, or playing deeper into tournaments. So naturally I reckon you must just lose the desire to practice daily for matches which take a couple of days to complete. I think Steve Davis also said similar shortly after he last had a good run in the world championship (about 2010 if I remember right).
Didn't Hendry say that Mark Williams was the worst thing that happened to his career. He started socialising with him and became friends and that he lost his edge because of it?
I always thought John Parrot retired too early, but he's clearly enjoying being a pundit these days. If only he hadn't won the World title in '91, which was yet another missed opportunity for Jimmy White.
Apparently, 'Wallace & Gromit' turned up at the Snooker yesterday lol. The popular Chinese player Ding Junhui turned up in dark brown trousers, and he was deducted a frame and had to start the match 0-1 behind!. He was wearing The Wrong Trousers lol, because of the strict snooker black n white dress code. I've never ever heard of that happening before!!. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/snooker/66987321
