My lads rugby team are trying to make it free for all kids, no weekly subs, no kit cost.

The lads are doing a sponsored run, covering the equivalent distance from our club in donny to Twickenham.

The target to raise isn’t huge, we just want to cover running costs, kit, and boots for the kids who’s parents can’t afford them.

If anyone can chuck a pound or two our way, it would be much appreciated.

That's a very worthy ideal, done.

Our rugby club is taking a different tack, we have a hugely successful Mini & Juniors section with hundreds of kids involved and the funds from that will be paying for a full time community coach to go into local schools to help introduce rugby to schools were it isn't traditionally played, to help support existing PE teachers and to organise teams in three high schools in order for them to be able to compete against the more established rugby playing grammar schools in the local area.

Our coaches are trying to get into the schools round here too - to support fitness but also to recruit players!!

    Thanks a lot

We’re into three figures already, so thank you for your support whoever else it is who donated. There’s at least one, probably two more of the donations come from here we think.

    Much appreciated.

Have you tried applying for grants.
There is literally millions put aside for kids sport - try Sport England.
Likely to dwarf any localised or individual sponsorship.

We have but we are in competition in our area with Bentley ARLFC, a newish rugby league setup.

They started from scratch less than a decade ago I think. Their first team played their first ever challenge cup qualifier last month, they had to borrow our ground to meet RFL standards - they’ve just secured funding for a new ground, a nice little stand and a pavilion.

Don’t get me wrong, they’re also brilliant for the community and there’s space for both of us so we’re nothing but pleased for them - but realistically it leaves only RFU grass roots funding for us to chase.

Our club itself got favourable terms on a loan to do up the clubhouse and build a function room (available at reasonable rates for anyone wanting a wedding reception or party in the DN5 area…); the junior section (of which I am a committee member) runs itself with separate funding and accounts.

Hence little things like this. We are over £200 now and the lads all have their own sponsor forms so will likely be getting to near target overall.

Thanks to Mido and anyone else who has added to the coffers since I last posted. I am a really unfit, obese dad of three, I got some serious and permanent injuries in an rtc 17 years ago so I can’t do anything that you’d consider exercise and really struggle, so I’m passionate about making sure kids (not just mine) have access to sport to stay healthy. Over and above the fitness side, the team ethic and camaraderie is a brilliant life lesson too.

    Thanks again to all
