Saw this pic on the 'barnsley i remember when' facebook group which if you are not a member of go join - some fabulous old pics and stories. This is one of the best yet - Imagine if they hadn't bulldozed all this - we'd have had streets like in York in our town centre. So much history lost which is sad but at least there are some pics floating around.

How amazing does Shambles Street look below... New street and the area around Tommy Tred/Casa Disco looked great too.

Brilliant photo, but very sad at the same time. This is the problem with Barnsley town centre for me now. Very little character left.

The street sign on the left says Market Hill, so it’s from the other end

A travesty of justice..this happened all over the place, a combination of corrupt developers and in some cases corrupt councillors feathering their own nests and passing it off as progress.

I read somewhere that in its heyday there were 13 pubs on Shambles Street.

I'd like to get some of these old photos and (if it's possible) create a virtual walk through town a bit like the little man on Google maps. Not sure if that sort of thing would be possible though, or even how to start.

Dog Lane is always covered in 5hit to preserve that authentic victorian feel.

I had this idea now things becoming possible with AI and AR to be able to put a pair of AR glasses on and have the old ghosted with the new or vice versa to see the history. Would need a lot of images an stitching together but maybe that's were AI could help. Be really cool that. Someone did a post on that group yesterday I think where they were holding up pics bang in line with the existing features and it was pretty neat.

Wasn't there something about pub crawls on Shambles street and having a half in each pub and not making it to the end?
