Delighted for them. I like to see the home nations do well except against us.

Might be different for people a bit older than me who lived through eras where Scotland & Ireland could compete with England but for me I see it a bit like a fairly local side to Barnsley down the leagues doing well like Harrogate going up to the football league.

That probably sounds disrespectful but it’s not meant to. Genuinely chuffed for them

Yeah, I cheered em on after switching over on to it after the England match.

It's a shame the majority of Scotland fans still have this 'Anyone but England' mentality, just looks like childish.

I've been and looked round Culloden field where Bonnie Prince Charlie fought against the Kings army
before fleeing to France some five times and read a book which detailed the aftermath ( re- the Highland Clearings).

Whilst readily conceding that there were barbaric acts on both sides, the mass slaughter of Highlanders by
British troops after the battle, can help anyone comprehend why down the ages, some Scots detest the English.

If everybody took the same daft view that the hatred needs to co time from hundreds of years ago, we would live in a very different world.

Judging a nation of today on what happened so far back, when indeed many of those living in Scotland are likely to have English ancestors is crazy to say the least.

If it was the other way round and the English putting this hatred in the public eye, it gets described as being the actions of the far right etc...

On one Culloden tour I was on, there were a load of folks from the States.
The guide asked if there were any Campbells in our party. Two American visitors replied that they were. With that, the
guide who was in full Highland dress, pulled a dirk from his sock and held it up to his neck and motioned a
cutting action across his throat. The Campbell's of course fought against their countrymen on the side of the King of
England. Similar passions exist in Ireland as a result of " the troubles."

When I go back to my home village and have a pint with some of my old mates who were Colliers during the strike,
listening to them reminisce about the good old days you can see the hatred burn bright in their eyes at the very mention of the Nottinghamshire Miners.

Holding grudges against whole sections of a country decades on, when many involved will have probably passed away. Now I get two living former miners from those areas having differing opinions. But to convey hatred towards probably someones grand children or great grand children isn't very logical. I could imagine there are still grudges held today for the miners as we are talking two to three generations back, but English being at war with the Scots...old history and that's where it should stay.

You are right to an extent. The problem comes when people feel they are still being ill treated. For ages Scotland was the guinea pig of Westminster ( poll tax rolled out there for eg) which keeps those historic feelings going. A sense of being the underdog if you like.

And is many English not as bad when hating the Germans? Singing songs of German bombers being shot down? Was that not many decades ago?

Let’s get this straight. Scots do not hate England. Scots hate Westminster. Now 58% of us support an independent Scottish nation once again.

And as for the ABE brigade. It’s sporting banter and nothing more.

I'm glad I dont hate all the Germans or Japanese or Italians, based on what they did 80 odd years ago, never mind hundreds.

And not just Campbells, those were civil wars, Scotland was torn in two and clan, country and family took opposing sides.

Didn’t feel like that when me and a lad from Wakefield went to watch Scotland v England a few years back with a group of Sottish colleagues in the Sottish end.
Having said that we were also told we weren’t allowed to go to bar to order in the pubs around so wasn’t all bad.

My dad and his beyond are from Fife and he had a massive chip on his shoulder when it comes to the English/Scottish rivalry. He tried his best to pass it on to me; But when you read the history for yourself, it’s essentially mostly like the majority of wars, all about religion, land ownership, feudal loyalty and tax. We’re there bogeyman, but then southerners are ours in general too, we all have someone to look down on/hate, especially when we feel our tax is going to the benefit of others. At the end of the day the majority of Scots and English have fought side by side for centuries and built and lost an empire together, we’ve always been stronger together. One day someone will be able to explain to me sufficiently as to why the SNP wants out of the UK so badly whilst also wanting into Europe so badly, the logic is flawed to me if they really want true independence as opposed to just having a severance from London for the sake of winning themselves a statue like Dewer did... If they put the separatist crap to one side, they could achieve so much more by proving an effective alternative up there.
