What are people's views on that phrase? Do you automatically respect someone simply because they're older than you? Should you do that? Or should your level of respect for people start at the same baseline and change as you learn and experience more about then?

    Tend to be the latter

Everyone gets respect. And then the other person will dictate how much respect they keep.

Whether they are old or not.

Respect should be earned not demanded, imho.

I agree. However if it comes to giving up a seat on a bus, or generally doing something that will help the older person. I’ll do it. I respect the fact that I may be more able to be stood a little longer, or wait a little longer.

In my job I speak to many Council tenants (not Barnsley). The odd occasion I get stick / abuse / awkward folk it’s almost always someone at the older end. The sense of entitlement among SOME old un’s winds me up frankly. They lose my respect very quickly.

It used to wind me up no end when I was a kid and waiting for a bus for about 20 minutes (never knew when they arrived so invariably always just missed one) and then an old person would turn up just as the bus arrived (obviously knew the times well) and then would hit me with their stick and rush onto the bus. I get that they wanted to guarantee themselves a seat (which I would have given to them anyway, although I suppose they wouldn't know that) but they didn't need to fricking hit me. I quickly learned to stand back and let them on first to stop it from happening.

I thought I was the only one who used to get hit by a stick at bus stops

or maybe start by respecting all. Then it’s up to people to retain that respect or show they don’t deserve it.

I think talking down to people and abusing a position of power shows a lack of respect too. There are so many instances in our everyday lives which show lack of respect.

I didn't say thankyou to Bob (bus driver) on friday because I was rushing for my train from Moorthorpe. As soon as I got on train I thought 5hit I didn't say thankyou.

It's bothered me all weekend. It was one moment but it defines me as a person until I see him and apologise.

He might not of even noticed but I did. I think that defines respect.

While i'm here my sincerest apologies to Loko. I was vicious last night. I might not like the tone of his posts but to call him an arsehole was abhorant on my part.

I'm not a troll but those posts made me cringe.

I am genuinely sorry for last night...on today. I've just witnessed a total lack of respect from Scotland during the national anthems. It was embarrassing.
