There should now be one. The country needs it to clear the air. I am a remainer but my reason for suggesting a referendum is not because of that: it is simply to resolve an issue that is divisive and is gridlocking politics. I know there was a vote to leave and therefore we should have left but we haven't because the TERMS of leaving were never clear. This for me is why there is gridlock. Parliament doesn't know how to enact 'leave' properly. They reflect the disunity in the country. I said a long time ago that if there was a referendum we should have 3 options (not 2) on the ballot. Those options should be 1. Leave with no deal( has to be on) 2. Leave with whatever deal is on the table (even if the best is Mays deal) 3. Remain ( if people have changed their minds after all the bloodletting) The result could be based on STV so effectively the weakest supported option would get eliminated. That would not necessarily mean any option would lose either. If such a scenario played out then the Government would be honour bound through Parliament to enact the result asap. No debate or prevarication. If the country really wanted no deal then it would have to be enacted. Similarly with the other options. Won't happen of course and there are flaws in my suggestion like all others but that's what Id do if I was Johnson... (hang on... No I'd die in a ditch after trying to break the law)...
Dunno about that, but they're definitely not reyt. I don't trust 3 things: Lager drinkers Horses Lager drinkers
With the passage of time and the issues/repercussions being better understood, it's possible the original result is no longer the will of the current electorate. The margin was so close anyway, it needs checking again, a bit like VAR would with an offside.
I think a 2 question vote is better. Should we leave or remain? If leave, should it be with whatever deal is on the table or without? If the answer to the first is remain the second question is irrelevant, but if it's leave then everyone has a say as to the terms.
Lol !!! Someone has swallowed the propaganda hook line and sinker. I’ll just spell it out to you - there can’t be another referendum until the first referendum result has been implemented. If there is - then Britain (the beacon of democracy throughput the world) will relinquish its status as a democratic country. However, once the first referendum has been implemented then a second referendum on that issue is feasible - say in another 5 years time eg to rejoin the EU.
Don’t bees get their arses ripped out and die when they decide to go mad and sting someone? Soft t*wts
How would the totting up work with 3 options? Is it most votes is the winner out of 3 or if leave wins the one with the most? If it’s winner out of 3 then vote is biased towards remain as it only has one option. If there’s going to be another one I think Mansfield Reds is probably best way forward
I shouldn't have said anything! Any post related to Brexit is either hijacked, misinterpreted, deliberately corrupted or used to insult. I wished to make a point and state a view. I'm not an naive person as someone on here has already implied and I have no wish to deny anyone's democratic wishes. I simply think a referendum with an STV angle might be a way of concluding matters and ultimately bringing the country together again. No more from me on this. Pointless.
I think it was a very well articulated post and agree with every word of it. I voted remain mainly because I didn’t want economic uncertainty and secondly I am not ashamed to say I don’t know enough about the European relationship and macroeconomic consequences of it anymore. For the latter reason there should never have been one in the first place because people in general were so ill informed There is now an argument to leave with no deal and face the inevitable recession just to create certainty but that seems slightly cretinous. I think another referendum would be helpful but I there is some logic to suggest it should be binary for deal or no deal
I can't see the problem with three options. A. Leave with Deal, B. Leave With No Deal and C. Remain. Remain will only win if it's greater than the combined total of A + B.
But then we're back to the current dead-end of A vs B, with no solution in sight. 2 questions: 1. Do you want to leave or remain in the EU? 2. Do you want to accept 'the deal' (whatever that might be) or leave with no detail? If 'remain' wins out on Q1, then Q2 doesn't come into play. If 'leave' wins, then obviously it does. We'll know what the deal is, we'll definitely know the implications of no-deal. Clear and binding, no comebacks. If the Brexiteers are so confident about our rosy, unicorn-festooned future outside the EU, then obviously they have nothing to fear from a second referendum. **EDIT - sorry Mansfield Red, hadn't seen your post earlier. Same hymn sheet....
What annoys me is politicians who are clearly remainers hiding behind the "lets leave with the best deal" bo llocks. Just come out and say you want to stop Brexit all together. The PM has many faults but at least you know which side he's on.
We joined the first time without having a referendum. Whether the EU would ever allow us to rejoin is another question
The only side he's on is his own. Famously, he wrote two very conflicting articles on leaving the EU; one for, one against, and only submitted the former when it became clear which option offered him the greatest personal & political gain. He's only ever wanted to just 'be' PM, to say he's been our prime minister. No interest or care in the responsibilities and gravitas of the position. That you place such faith in the most ill-equipped, narcissistic individual to take this country forward is both disturbing and not a little telling.
People put a first & second preference. If there is no clear winner (say over 55%), lowest result is eliminated & the second preferences from the people that voted for it are added to the remaining two totals, assuming people want to give a second preference. It is feasible that people may select to leave with a deal (presumably May's deal, unless a revised one is accepted by the EU), some may then as second choice side with staying in, or leaving with no deal, which I would say is the most democratic way to settle all this. Nothing is ideal, but seems the fairest way forward.
