Isn't there a radio station in Barnsley? There was a Dearne FM, I think. What became of Dearne FM? Why do people listen to Radio Sheffield? I understand why Barnsley people get angry listening to Radio Sheffield. Is it too expensive to set up a local station? Seems that there may be a bit of hole, here..
Dearne FM became part of "Greatest Hits Radio Yorkshire" last September according to Wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dearne_FM
The Dearne FM staff were sold down the river last year. As Brush says part of the greatest hits national radio station. Just a little bit of local news and travel thrown in now and then in between Pat Sharp and Andy Crane
I just read that wiki report.... possibly its a buyout thing and a bigger entity bought out the Barnsley company and transmits to a wider audience of which barnsley is now just a smaller part..... a radio sheffield type thing.. anybody understand this field?
Is this a popular station in Barnsley? you can't go wrong with greatest hits... too much advertising?
Jack, is it a money talks thing... like they have their own spreadsheet which says that it is good business to buyout say, Dearne FM, and build their business around non-local advertising?
Yes Dearne FM became part of the Bauer Media empire with the service being replaced by the national service 'Greatest Hits Radio'. It was the pandemic which was the final nail for many small stations like Dearness FM who were part of the Lincs FM group. Mainly forced by massive reductions in advertising revenue. Shame really that Barnsley as a whole hasn't got it's own FM/DAB station.
Try listening to Pen FM. That is local radio broadcast on 95.7FM. Because it’s transmitted from Hoylandswaine, you can get it all over Barnsley and parts of Wakey/Hudds etc. It’s a community station but actually decent. It is a little Penistone-centric as you’d expect, but it’s 100% local and 100% community run. It’s better and more more professional than it sounds - give it a go.....
I use to listen to Dearne Fm, it wasn’t bad and wanted to offer support to a local station, I’ve stopped listen to greatest hits radio, no new music and repeating songs you’ve heard a million times.
Penis FM would probably attract more listeners for the first time, then hit them with it (good owd local radio like).
Definitely a gap in the market. I'm picturing Reds FM, broadcasting from Oakwell, with guest DJs from the ranks of the BBS. Dance sessions from John Peachy, Jimmyviz, etc... Jazz from Mr Badger... Prog rock from Brush and Red Rain... The Springsteen hour from Bossman... Cookery Corner from StephenDawson... DIY Question Time hosted by Jamdrop... Political debate from Marlon, Sadbrewer, etc... Late night sexual advice from TerryNutkins...
I made that mistake when Radio X first started broadcasting. As a long-time subscriber to the television station, I had my reservations regarding how the format would translate to radio. Nevertheless, I was unprepared for how bad it was. Chris Moyles playing 90's britpop is the least erotic thing I've ever heard.
I believe there's a Barnsley online radio station called The Vibe. Its decent to me but depends what music your into. They play a lot of indie rock and roll.
Tbf I listen to radio Sheffield a lot during the day. And Barnsley comes out of it well. Topic wise. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But Toby Foster, is a good start to the day. Cracking sense of humour.
I listened to Toby most mornings while I drove to work at Huddersfield. Really made me chuckle at times.
