can't find an answer to this anywhere... Having missed out on visiting grandaughter, daughter and son in law at Easter, we planned to try again this Xmas only for this latest surge in Covid to throw our plans awry.
First Doncaster entered tier 3 (unclear as to whether we could self isolate with them by not leaving the house for 14 days) but not worth the risk anyway. Now we have this lockdown. which may be lifted by Xmas.
However my question is this. In order to leave Italy the local airport prior to departure is providing a Covid test that takes 20 minutes to get results. If you test negative you fly if positive you don't. Does that mean (assuming South Yorkshire is back in Tier 2) we could visit without quarantining for 14 days or does that still apply? Can't find anything anywhere that tells us. ATM we are pretty much self isolating given the huge increase in daily cases in Italy ATM. The latest decrees are very much the same as the UK ones EXCEPT our region is closing all 'Scuola Superiore' (equivalent of Secondary schools in UK) for 3 weeks from Tuesday as evidence points to them being instrumental creating hotspost of Covid.

Write to your mate Johnson and ask him it's him making all the rules, not us,

Boris will know. It's not the government's fault. Stop criticising him.

It will all depend on whether there is a travel corridor to Italy at the time you fly. And whether we are out of lockdown. You have no chance of knowing in advance just like we havent for pretty much everything. Tories don’t do forward planning

As Farnham said, it depends whether Italy is on the "list" as to whether you need to isolate or not. However, cant you just isolate at your daughter's house? Obviously dependent on whether you can mix households then. I don't think the UK are as draconian as some countries where you have to isolate in recognised isolation hotels. In fact I'm pretty sure it's all based on trust because I know people who have been to Spain and failed to isolate when they got back.

Thanks for the replies gents (unlike the rest that were either unhelpful personal digs at me, political rants at Govt or off topic)
    .
We planned to isolate at the house if necessary but the airport test is relevant and a pre-requisite as far as we are concerned since we do not want to import Covid to the UK or the family. 30 euros each for peace of mind is worth it IMO. Plan was to fly into Gatwick arriving around midnight, stay at the Marriot at the airport overnight, collect the hire car across the road and drive straight to Doncaster. They plan to do all the shopping for us. Although my missus is desperate to see her 4 year old grand-daughter, since all the latest figures show Europe and the UK heading towards a far worse position than the 1st wave, it looks like again (we had to cancel last Easter's visit) the plans are scuppered.:( Better 'safe than sorry' though for all of us and there are thousands of people in the same position, and many in a worse one than us. Easyjet (who we are booked with may cancel flights anyway) in some ways better for us as if they don't we lose our money since they were non refundable on cancellation. Ho hum!

However regardless of whether it is TIer 2 or 3 or lockdown I really don't understand how you can isolate in a 'family household' specifically stated in the Govt. information, Even in a large 4 bedroom house when part of that household is free to come and go. Obviously you are going to 'mix' within the house. Our son-in-law is a teacher so is potentially exposed to/exposes others to Covid. My daughter is on leave for those two weeks anyway and working from home 4 days a week and works in the office/studios the remaining day (albeit they can/do socially distance when in the workplace. My grand daughter also normally attends nursery 4 days a week. So another 'leak' when it comes to self isolating.

Italy is no longer in the travel corridor, so 14 day quarantine applies - that is irrespective of a negative test as you could become infected during transit and take up to two weeks for symptoms to appear. Remember that it is 14 full days so that if you land on the Monday, it ends at midnight on Tuesday after two weeks.

It looks like UK holidays are not allowed (from the 4th) for British residents - therefore I would be surprised if they were allowed for overseas residents. Although knowing how the government works and money talking...
