1) I had absolutely no idea why Walton was dropped for Collins, and thought it was very harsh. 2) I didn't understand why we needed both Morris and Dike. The answers to both of these are now as obvious as the lack of footballing talent in S6.
It's close but I think he's definitely the better shot stopper. However Collins is definitely slightly more aware when coming off his line and commanding his area and the area around his area. With the way we play, split seconds in these areas can make the difference between conceding twice and keeping a clean sheet.
Brad Collins has only let in more than one goal in one of his last eleven matches. Jack Walton has let in more than one in three of his last eleven games. Collins has 7 clean sheets in his 14 games this season. Walton has 6 clean sheets in his 25 games this season. Walton is a handy back up keeper but all the stats (including our best ever win run) have Collins as the best of the two.
Interestingly though I don't think he actually was/is better in this area. It's just that Val has chosen him as his #1 and you can tell is working with him to improve his starting position for the high line that we have. I'm not saying that they didn't work on Walton, but Walton already had some of that in him, as with Collins he loved nothing more than to be rooted to his line and often when rushing out in the past caused errors and panic. Big benefit for a new manager in terms of having a cup run and being able to play both your keepers to assess them. He rates Collins better overall, but this 'sweeper' role is completely new to him. He's doing well at it though because I don't get the fear that others talk about - he always seems in control and even slicing out for a throw-in is better than letting them through one on one.
I posted on here that I wasn't hopeful of Morris being what we needed. It's looking like I might have been way off with that one. Lovely goal last night.
