Listening to Duff the other day I got the impression we are waiting for Premier clubs to decide there squads before letting players out on loan.Duff had success with his loan signings last season with Wright from Leicester and the lad from Spurs (since signed for Cardiff).
I would like to think Wright could be a target after getting rave reviews playing under Duff.Could we make it a Leicester double with Wright and Hirst,? both done really well at this level.
Is there any other names out there who could bolster and improve our squad?

Both would be great signings. Might have a chance with Wright but not a hope in hell with Hirst. Ipswich are keen and I reckon a championship club could even take him.
His stock is high after a great second half of season at Pompey.

After last season with Wright im shocked he isn't already out on loan - unless of course with Leicesters money troubles and inability to sign players, he'll be staying in and around the squad this year. He was fantastic previously. Id be delighted if we got any one of them

Callum Wright would look like a number ten and we have Benson, Aitchison and Thomas who can play that role already. Good player, but we don't have money to waste in positions already covered imho. The latest buzz would seem to be that George Hirst is signing (has signed) a new contract with Leicester, but with a view to be loaned out to a championship club this season, in order to advance his career and see if he can hack it at the higher level. Hirst would be a truly great signing for us, even on loan, but I would wager that Rotherham, Blackpool, or Wigan would be more likely destinations for him. I hope that we are in for him, however, but would doubt that we would get him against that competition. Someone mentioned Tyreece Simpson and it looks as though Huddersfield may have agreed terms with Ipswich for him (£500k looks a big gamble), but that he will be loaned out straight away again. We would have a better chance of getting him on loan from Huddersfield, which would get him used to the area and easier for Hudders to keep tabs on him. Better chance of getting Simpson, so I hope that we are in for him (tough ex Rugby player, probably already known by Norwood at Ipswich, so that would work okay). I am still hoping for Sam Smith from Cambridge, but that would involve a reasonable fee and we wouldn't land him without selling either/both of Styles and/or Helik, so that sort of signing might not be viable. I am sure that we will land at least one before the window closes and trust the pragmatic Michael Duff to work to the best with the squad he has available, only adding where it enhances the quality in the key areas identified. Maybe a slow build and slow burner, but it will come. COYR

Can't see Hirst going back to Rotherham, he didn't do much there last time.

If you mean Tedic, he was a loan for our youth squads at present

Looking at our squad I reckon you can get away with playing a filler in at right back. We're bombed out with central defenders that could fill in.

Midfield in Connell, Benson, Wolfe, Hondermarck, Kane, Thomas and Ackroyd doesn't lack skill. It's bite we need. A genuine experienced box to box midfielder.

Up front's where we're truly lacking. I think we need a partner for Norwood. I'm surprised Jalo and Iseka aren't getting a run. I'm happy with Cole and Aitchison.

The long and short I think you can get away with a loanee at right back or winger but up front or in the middle they have to be ours.

I'd like us to get a right back on loan. Sell Helik and Styles and sign a midfielder and centre forward.

Still can't fathom getting somebody in on loan just for the u23s. Maybe we're being paid a fee, or perhaps there's a chance he'll be able to step up before the end of the season?

Problem is, would you be happy to sell them on the cheap? The club get hammered because 'we sell at first price and dont get proper money for them', so when we're holding out for real value, theyre kinda getting it for that too. The club and it's board have done a lot wrong, but in that situation they really can't win. I'd be happy to sell Styles for 1.5m and a big sell on clause. We need funds for more important positions, especially if hes wanting to play in middle. Think he's made it clear he doesnt wanna be here. I'd be all for letting him go and getting someone in up top. Hopefully he does really well and we get a big chunk of change just like the Stones deal!

Can't argue with you on any of it mate. I don't think Duff was particularly pleased either in all honesty. Proper weird signing, unless it's going to be like Vita 2.0 and he starts playing and performing in second half of season...

Would you take the Man City lad from last year back for the midfield slot?

Too lightweight at that level and no reason to think he’d be any better battling against the likes of Scowen at this

Yes I'd sell on the cheap to bring in reinforcements because there's a real danger of going down again. We'll most likely lose 2 or all 3 of our next three League games.

The board might have to do more than just a £1 million injection to keep us ticking over.

    We're on a tightrope here.

I'd take someone from League 2 that knows his job and offer him a 2 year contract. We need someone to break up play and get the ball to someone who can play. Doesn't have to be flash.

The young lad from Citeh will no doubt be the new Kante but he's too inconsistent.

I thought Wolfe was going to be a world beater but he looks to be going the same was as Palmer. If we don't bring anyone else in Duff needs to use the squad and give Ackroyd a go.

For all our financial woes and poor form we need to utilise players on the books.

What's the point dishing out these contracts to the under 23's and not using them?

That's why recruitment needs to be an experienced spine. Norwood will be a masterstroke but only if we reinforce the midfield and get him a partner up front.

    Tom Nichols anyone?

Joking aside what do you suggest mate? Knowing you as long as I do and sharing quite a few of your views on Barnsley F.C. I'd value your opinion.

I have a question, after reading this thread.
Do we have a U23 squad or a U21 squad?
Some in this thread mention U23 players.
BFC Academy Twitter had a link to today's U23 game v Ipswich. Clicking on the link however, the article was corrected to U21.
The official site squad lists say U21.

Did I miss something? When did the age-group change? Not club-bashing in anyway, just genuinely curious? I still referred to them as U23 ( till now)

    @YTBFC ?
