Well after believing for years that this place was a sh%t hole . I have just sailed into the city from Bilbao. It looks very impressive city from what I have just seen. But what as really impressed me was the down to earth folk we have just met. Called the pub 7 miles from port to check if we can stay overnight if we had a meal. They were fully booked but was told we could still stay. Sat in the pub drinking copius amounts of guiness trying to order a takeaway. The lady behind the bar offered to drive up to the takeaway 2 miles away ,as she was just clocking off . What a lovely set of people down to earth with a great city and a championship team. Darts team were all good lads with great banter too. Life's great meeting real people .
I’ve heard it referred to as a northern town in the south. I suspect that’s down to large numbers of northern immigrants that end up there after leaving the navy.
Sorry dining ,was fully booked . But all the takeaways wouldn't deliver. It was in Southwick Golden Lion . Darts lads was a great laugh too. Aaaaar much for 2 pints but well worth it. Friendly folk around here.
I wasn't taking the piss out of you. I was making what I considered a fairly simple but humourous reply. You'll have noticed that I also liked your post indicating that I liked what you were saying
I remember playing county darts in a place called Fareham' not far off Portmouth and it was the first time i'd seen bouncers on the doors of takeaways' a bit un nerving but the folk were fine.
ah many a great story and night out started in the golden lion, the village of Southwick is famous for operation overlord but also the the naval base there was home of royal navy operations training back in the day ... (its a police school now). the landlord used to cash a cheque for £15.50, give us back £15 and we'd spend the evening giving it him all back in exchange for the wine he made in his shed, best part was he wouldnt take the cheques to the bank if it was after mid month. you aren't really in Portsmouth there however, once off Portsea island that's it done, the Meon valley is lovely though, i work in the big metal ship you can see on the top of the hill !
I nearly wrote the motorhome off driving past that ,I said ffs there's a ship on the left on the hill. Thought it was the 30 hours on the ferry crossing playing tricks with my head.
I lived and worked in the Portsmouth area for 15 years or so and have many fond memories. Nice part of the world.
Portsmouth is a great place, still a working class city in the south, good people, salt of the earth. Loads of history to the place too, loads to see. Maybe because it’s an island, maybe because of the RN connections, but it never got too big for its boots.
Was down Fareham early July visiting family. Stayed on a caravan park family of 8 of us. The people down there were fantastic. If quiet in bar would close a bit early but come and warn us to get another drink and use toilets before closing and just lock up leaving us sat on decking overlooking Solent. Lovely place lovely people. Been down a few times and always enjoy going down there.
I had absolutely given up on meeting people kind and caring as folks around Barnsley. Hospitality second to none. One of the darts player sonny ,was the chef in the pub. Gave me his mobile no and said text me nx time you come ,there will be a beer on the bar waiting for you.
