    His great gift was getting his guests to talk openly - not making the show about himself like others in that genre.

    I think it's obvious he was a proud Barnsley man and once upon a time was obviously a fan of the club and held it dear. Like many, he moved away from his home town and moved on. Wasn't the first, won't be the last. Yes, his drooling appearences at big games was a bit cringe, but he obviously retained an affection and probably had more BFC stories to tell than many of us on here.

    Safe to say he probably didn't ask to appear for interview when we had a telly game, but was probably coerced by the same TV producers who focus on old pits, flat caps and whippets for our backstory.

    I'll remember him more as part of my TV childhood and beyond. Was good at what he did.

    RIP sir.
    Read his autobiography when he along with friends Dicky Bird and Geoffrey Boycott played at Barnsley. he was a decent cricketer himself in his younger days. But chose journalism. Good read.
    Loved his chat show. Not stealing the limelight and got the best out his guests.
