Why are they not starting until 24 August?

(Paralympics is a shortened version of Parallel Olympics - nothing to do with Paraplegic.)

It was to do with paraplegic initially, but they changed the meaning later on to what you said.

Makes sense to me to have them staggered. Some events require different setups and different arenas etc which can’t just be changed in the blink of an eye.

It also has the added benefit of the audience having some time between, which surely leads to better viewing figures for the Paralympics.

No offence to the OP, but the question demonstrates how generally ignorant we still are to the multitude of issues facing less able bodied people. Olympians or not.

I assume because the Paralympics is not just for paraplegic people.

Because it was expanded to include people that weren't paraplegic.

    - not sure on this but some previous Games the Paralympics have taken place at the same time as the Olympics ??

I went to the Paralympics in London 2012 and I think they were held immediately after the Olympics.
The Classifications are extremely complex and often controversial - you can get competitors with a wide range of disability competing in the same heat/event and it's obvious some competitors have an advantage.

You went to the wrong thing then.

The 2012 Olympics closed on the 12th August and the Paralympics started on the 29th.
