George Best was born. Not only was he one of the greatest ever to play the beautiful game. He also left us with some brilliant quotes. Here are some of my favourites.

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

"If you'd given me the choice of going out and beating four men and smashing a goal in from thirty yards against Liverpool or going to bed with Miss World, it would have been a difficult choice. Luckily, I had both."

    On David Beckham

"He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right."

    On Cantona

"I'd give all the Champagne I've ever drunk to be playing alongside him in a big European match at Old Trafford."

And to finish I think a lovely thought

"They'll forget all the rubbish when I've gone and they'll remember the football. If only one person thinks I'm the best player in the world, that's good enough for me"

    RIP George.

Phenomenal player. And...he's right about Beckham - totally overrated just cos he took a good free kick.
As an aside...on this day in 1455 the War of the Roses started...just so you know

Glad I saw him play. Unfortunately at the end of his career when with Hibs but he still had it.

But the best one must have been from the room service at the hotel where George was on the bed, drinking champagne with Miss World and squillions of £10 notes. “Where did it all go wrong George?”

I stand corrected. My Dad has always said the same.

I was lucky enough to see him at Oakwell, though I do not remember anything he did. I also saw him at Bramhall Lane a couple of years later. I do remember him wowing the 50,000+ crowd. They were spilled well over into the cricket end that day.

In 2002 when Brian Clough was asked “who’s the best footballer, David Beckham or George Best?” The great man replied. “I think Beckham just shades it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mind you George HAS just had a liver transplant!”

Saw him once at Bellend Rd, can't remember much about the game but I do remember a Man U fan running onto the pitch just before kick-off to kiss his boots. A phenomenal talent. I always remember the "goal" he scored against England when Gordon Banks was about to punt it upfield when he nicked it away and popped it in the net, still don't understand why it was disallowed.
