what a waste of money the pennine tunnel will be, it will cost 16 billion and will be 18 miles long

i dont think it will be a big money saver at all and i thought we will soon be in recession after leaving the EU im sure this will make that more likely to happen

what happens if something happens in the tunnel? an explosion? its unlikley to happen but if it did hundreds of people could be injured or killed with it been a tunnel it would go through because it cant go anywhere else

i do agree it could cut driving times down by a lot but i dont think its worth spending 16 billion on and it could take about 10 years to complete

    Agreed

Total waste of money. Who wants to to Manchester anyway? Why not invest a small amount in upgrading the Hope Valley railway line and make it affordable to travel by train with subsidies?

Same goes for HS2, the most idiotic plan I've ever seen which will benefit London and the South East a million times more than any benefit to the North.

16 billion is peanuts compared with spending 230 billion on Trident which will never be used. Or the money which may be spent on HS2.

East-West connections are very poor in England which is one of the reasons the North is so poor. The tunnel will bring prosperity to South Yorkshire which is in need of investment. I would rather have the money spent in the North than in the South.

Sorry pal but this is one of the reasons we don't usually get this kind of infrastructure in the north, because there's always too much opposition, the main one being the cost - the reaction is then, "OK we'll spend the money in London instead".

As good as trains are, especially on fast lines, nothing beats the convenience of driving, and bringing Yorkshire and Manchester/Liverpool area closer together will do wonders for the northern economy.

I think the tunnel could be a disaster if a fire from a collision occurs.
Why not take it over land on the North side on proper concrete pillars.
    This is more popular abroad
They have been swayed with the existing tunnel, but I do not this will be in the equation as with latest tunnelling techniques they will construct a total new one
It is the fire risk that concerns me

There probably will be a fire at some point, there's been a few in the channel tunnel and it's much more difficult to build safety into that with it being under water, but it works, it'll be fine, you'll be able to escape into the other tunnel.

I think it would be more effective to upgrade the railway from East to West, ideally they should do both. Anyone who's spent anytime trying to get across the pennines during rush hour either on a train or in a car would not be saying its a waste of money at all!
