In the first Rothmans book I ever got - 94/5, just after I started going to games - I think it said our nickname is Tykes, Reds, or Colliers.

I have never heard anyone, though, even a very old fan, use it.

Similarly, calling games between us and Doncaster 'the Pitmen derby' is not something I have ever heard a Barnsley fan use.

I started watching in the early/ mid sixties and it was always "The Colliers"
Tykes usually got mentioned if playing someone from outside Yorkshire.
On a personal note I love "The Colliers" as it speaks volumes for our heritage.

My dad always called them the Colliers. I think the Tykes came around in the 60s. Interestingly, they have Coventry as the Bantams ( Sky blues) and Bradford city as the Paraders (Bantams). Always thought Huddersfield were always the Terriers.

It was and The Tykes was also used. And if you go back far enough of course there’s The Saints.

But in nearly 60 years following the Reds, I’ve only ever heard our fans use “The Reds” as our nickname.

I didn't see the Rothman's books, but I'd have started following about the same time and I remember reading those three nicknames in a list somewhere - maybe the stickerbook for the Premiership season? Like you, never heard anybody actually use Colliers. I always think that 'Tykes' tends to mostly be used by non-supporters on television etc (with the exception of online usernames of course - used to use it myself in one of the very early incarnations of this forum!).

The Terriers is relatively new - 70s or 80s I think.

And who’d want to be associated with a Yorkshire Terrier - our Bulldog is a bit more like it.

When I was a young teenager in the 70s I remember a guy who always stood on the old Spion Kop shouting ‘ Baaarnsley Miners,Baaarnsley Colliers’ Think it was the only thing he ever shouted

I actually like " Colliers" like you say its more fitting to the town and area, rather than " The Tykes" which is a term used for all Yorkshire folk
