Just been to see the new naked gun film with Liam Neeson. Sadly a poor imitation of the real thing. Liam Neeson isn't a natural funny man like Leslie Nielsen who is a master of comedy.2 out of 5.
Id advise watching the 4 episodes of Police squad and the 3 original Naked Gun films. Because they are fcukking epic.
The point of Nielsen was that he was a serious actor who played the role dead pan. He wasn’t a master of comedy and that’s the point.
What about the other 2 episodes of Police Squad? I rewatched the original Naked Gun film the other day with my son, in advance of going to watch the new one. Must admit, I was a little disappointed with it, just as I was when it came out, but that’s because I love the TV series so much. In the series Nielsen plays it straight, like he did in Airplane, but I’d forgotten how much mugging he does in the film. Don’t get me wrong, there are loads of funny scenes in the film, but I much preferred the series, where he plays it like he doesn’t know he’s in a comedy. I’m going to watch the film tomorrow night with the kids, but I fear the funniest scene might have been in the trailer, with the OJ Simpson gag. If anyone has a taste for disturbing horror films (and you’re not squeamish), I saw Bring Her Back today and it was very good. But even my hardened horror fan daughter had to look away from the screen at one point.
Was he? I never knew that. I only really know him from those kind of films and just thought that was his comedy style. Never realised he was a serious actor

Nielson is quality. Poseidon another straight role. Difficult to part the 2 sometimes, as great in comedy roles as well. Dead pan imo is a quality in film comedy. Not everyone can master the art. Those that can are special. And Nielson is far more recognised in that sphere. Far outweighing his straight roles which were fewer. Admittedly a lot of TV straight acting prior.
