For those that are interested and havent seen it the queue to get to the summit of Everest is unbelievable already cost 2 mountaineers their lives due to exhaustion at altitude. I cant imagine its what many pictured when they set off
I just wonder how they get back down. I cant see many passing places on that route or is there a 1 way system in place and they go down the other side
Saw that on the news this morning, its madness! waiting hours just to move up a few feet, think I'd just take a picture of the queue and chalk fk it on it and go back down.
It's to do with daylight hours and weather as there is only a small window of opportunity to make the summit and then descend safely.
Ben Nevis was enough for me when I was around twenty. Absolutely amazing experience. When we set off, it was blistering hot and so the lads were a bit puzzled when our Regimental Sergeant Major told us to make sure we wore our pullovers and carried a greatcoat with us. As we approached the final path leading to the summit, it became clear why he had advised us as to what to wear. From nowhere, a mist dropped down like a curtain and we could just make out the outline of some sheep. I will always remember, that frost began to form on my eyelashes. We finally got to the top and literally couldn't see a thing. It was like being in dense fog. All that was up there, was a Spot height and a couple of corrugated shelters. We went inside one and after eating our corn beef rations, dry biscuits and some water, it was time for us to set off back down. It was weird. Wrapped up like we would during Winter and then suddenly, having to remove our gear as we emerged back into brilliant sunshine. We were all fit lads, but it was one of the most taxing yomps I ever went on. I was amazed when I learned that there is an annual race to the summit. Total respect for anyone that takes part in that. They must be super human.
