..The videos of women in Iran being forcibly dragged off the streets and forced into vans for failing to wear or wearing the Hijab correctly and using live rounds and tear gas on protestors parallel the exactly actions portrayed in the fictional State of Gilead (formerly USA) . Both result from religious fanatics and zealots who follow religious texts unquestioningly (in the case of Gilead using Old Testament and punishments) The subjugation of women and complete control in crushing dissent is frightening in both the fictional and Real Worlds is frightening. I detest organised religion, or more to the point, those who seek to use it to control and dominate people.
I read the Handmaids tale fairly recently and the scary thing is that everything that happens in Gilead based on fact somewhere in the world. The current suppression in Iran is unfortunately not unique. Religion is used as a tool for a few (almost always men) to control the population. I can’t reconcile this with the teachings of Christ or from the little I know Mohammed either Much more familiar with Christianity which gave us the Inquisition Crusades and lots of Evil people in the US Bible Belt. But then gives us people who fought for the abolition of slavery Justice in South Africa and El Salvador etc It’s hard to know what to think other than despair at the way religion is used some times
Completely agree with this. I've always thought religions around the world were made just to enforce & scare people.
Looking forward to watching the 5th series of Handmaids Tale. Excellent, if at times harrowing viewing. You could see many on the right of US politics seeing Gilead as being some sort of utopia. Like most codes, including Marxism, Christianity has been used in many evil ways, both past & present. Any easy way to justify evil acts, the same with Islam & Judaism, all of which are of course Abrahamic faiths & share many of the same texts, despite people killing each other over minor differences in interpretation of them. That said the same texts have inspired a lot of great people to change things for the better too. I try to keep any beliefs I have to myself & keep an open mind about other people. That's the only way I personally can get through life. It's a shame a lot of the press & social media outlets encourage this sort of hatred & bigotry to fester for their own ends.
I was put off for life regarding getting 'blow jobs' having read, a gruesome detailed account of someone who's partner had an epileptic fit and seizure during the ..ahem...activity. Unfortunately it was the 'giver' not the receiver, the latter nearly dying from blood loss and who subsequently spent some considerable time having the partly severed appendage sewn back on!! Worse was that she had never suffered from epilepsy up to that point so neither envisaged that there was any risk.
I always thought that was an old wives tale. I wish I had a pound for the number of times I've heard accounts of this going back to my time in secondary school.
If only it could just be blamed-on religion. Tbh I find the way this thread has gone a bit depressing, women are seen only as.sexual objects.
Not only sexual objects RH, they need to be good at cooking washing ironing etc, don't do the weaker sex down
When you break it down to our primitive nature then we are sexual objects to each other. The sole purpose is to multiply and nurture young. You could argue the mans job is done once he's shot his load. Making the woman's role vitally important.
Be glad you are not a praying mantis is all i can SAY @Stephen Dawson https://www.theguardian.com/environ...-like-an-apple-and-cleans-her-face-like-a-cat This post seems to meld together religion, (well preying) and issues relating to gender equality in other species.
