Latest Heritage project interview now available on Youtube, really enjoyed this one; we actually spoke to Mick for over an hour and he had some great stories to tell, some of which sadly had to be edited out!
No problem; he was such a genuine bloke. We interviewed him in a Sheffield hotel in October, the night before Ipswich played Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. We were in a small conference room next to a large function suite where the Ipswich entourage were having an evening meal. The Ipswich press officer came in after about 45 minutes and said "They're waiting for you next door, Mick." - to which Mick replied, " I'll come through when I'm ready, I'm still talking with these Barnsley lads." What a top tarn bloke.
Same here, got a bit teary listening, great interview, loved bit about John Saunders having a *** before the game!
Times change! The late John Saunders was a great bloke and a quality centre half. I remember going to a match against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank in the mid seventies (we lost 3 - 0) and saw Mick Butler coming out of the players' entrance after the match smoking a ***.
A reight bloke was JS... lol he once won me the golden goal prize with a bullet of a header ... think we were playing Swansea. .spent the money on an engagement ring for the first wife... in hind sight if only he'd missed..... life could have been so different ....pmsl
I thought his reference to the 7 year age gap between himself and Taff was particularly pertinent with the model we've been operating at Oakwell this past few years. The way that Taff's experience helped Mick to develop as a player. Wish we could get that experienced spine in to the current squad, keeping the youngsters on, to use Mick's words, a short lead. Great interview with a legend not just for Barnsley Football Club but also the town of Barnsley.
Lol... Come on.NorthernD .... cut me some slack here ......when I bought the ticket I bought it to help the club surely I should be congratulated on helping the club raise funds ... I was just unlucky ...wrong bloke in wrong place at wrong time ..... PMSL
Absolutely fantastic interview. Thank you so much. Loving the series, such a fantastic project. Any plans to do Clarkey or Norman ? One of the lowest points of Norman's career was when he was sacked by Barnsley ...... he loved his time at the club and even had a photo of Ronnie in his downstairs loo for many years after he'd left Oakwell !
