We signed McGeehan as an attacking midfield player who scored a lot of goals in League 2. I don't think he's got the skill to do that at a higher level. I'm not slagging him off, each and every one of us has our limitations. Last season he was asked to play a different role and we got a really good season from him as a box to box midfield player. He worked really hard, he got his foot in, he supported the attack and helped out the defence, and he chipped in with a few goals and assists. He was like what midfielders used be: not an attacking midfield player, not a defensive midfield player, just a midfielder. I say 'just' but it's a great player to have and seems to be getting rarer and rarer these days. This season he's been asked to do something different. He's the one who is supposed to receive the ball from the keeper or the two centre halves and we build our attacks from there. So, he's receiving the ball, deep in our half, facing our goal, often under pressure from the opposition. And he's making mistakes. But it's not his fault because it's not his game. I don't know if McGeehan could have another good season building on what he did last year. I don't know if he can make that step up. But he'd have a lot better chance than in the role he is currently being asked to play which simply exposes his limitations. He's got bags of energy and determination, let's harness that, rather than put him under pressure in a position he's struggling to come to terms with.
I don’t understand why Mowatt isn’t the one to drop deep, and bring the ball out from the back, given that he’s got more ability on the ball.
Who needs a Head Coach eh. Perhaps he’s starting to feel a little pressure to his and his team’s indifferent start to the season, or just needs a little more settling in time like most of his new team mates. Hope he has as much as an influence on his former club today as he did in the corresponding fixture last season.
I do agree with what you say although he was great against fulham many peoples man of the match, since then it hasn't just been the costly passes his whole game has been poor don't know if it's a confidence thing but we cant afford to drop him as we have no one as good to step in thread bare in that position.
I watched leeds doing this other day. Keeper to kalvin phillips he turns and either plays ball to centre mid or two wide men. Difference is he is on centre circle when he receives it and they do it a lot quicker. It does work very well if done properly and a lot quicker than us.
I've always had my doubts of him as a holding midfielder. He coped OK last year, but has a higher level of competition this time out. Not signing that extra holding midfielder could prove costly this season, I hope not though. For me in home games we are more on the front foot & the players most likely to be exposed on the break are the full backs, whereas away we are pegged back more, despite having lots of possession in our own half & it's vital passes are more accurate.
I observed this in another thread, so sorry to be repetitive. But... McGeehan got his break in the first team, last season, covering for the injured Kenny Dougall. And, in all honesty, didn't set the world alight. Defensively, he isn't great. However, when Dougall returned, Stendel persevered with McGeehan, but in a more attacking role, and that's when we saw the player we thought we'd signed. But again, without Dougall, he's dropping deep and dropping clangers. McGeehan, I am confident, will come good again when Dougall and Brown return.
I dont think Mcgeehan should be singled out as struggling as the whole team are adjusting to the new level, he needs options to pass to and then those players need the confidence to hold, play and use the ball and also have options to pass on to. Woodrow is a goal scorer not a no 10 footballer, chaplin tries hard is a good footballer but struggles due to his size against 6ft4 defenders, Wilkes powerful good on the ball but end product not there yet, Thomas, Bahre good on the ball but no physical presence, Thiam good on the ball in short bursts but cant maintain enough during the game, williams and sibbick no end product but are triers and doing ok considering the step up in opposition. We have a team of good lads who give their all but are not complete footballers yet ecause they are still all young and developing. We need to scrap to stay up and hope to progress next season.
I agree with this. Use to our strengths. Especially so early in the season. But then I think of conor hourihane. He was developed Into a complete all rounder. And then sold. So maybe that's what they are doing with cam... I don't think he will be anywhere near Connor like but would make sense.
Wasn't singling him out. He's been criticised on here quite a bit of late. I was offering an opinion as to why he may not be performing as well as we've seen previously.
It was a general comment pal and i agree with your reasons for his current form, i dont think Stendel has found a way of playing yet that suits these players, for this league, at this stage of their development.
