Similar happened to me in the 90’s. On a packed flight Manchester to Ibiza, soon after take off, there was an almighty bright orange flash and loud boom from the left engine. The pilot told us not to be alarmed and that we were going to make an emergency landing at Gatwick. We were greeted by what looked like 100s of blue lights at the side of the runway, but other than that it was no different to any other landing. There was no panic, screaming or crying during the flight, but it was noticeable that when the replacement plane took off to continue the journey, only 26 passengers chose to take it!

It's sad to see the demise of the 4-engine jets. It was always more comforting on the 15-hour flight over water from SFO-SYD. :D

There's a line in that, where one of the passengers first thought was to put her purse and phone back in her pocket so she could be ID'd.

Honestly, that would definitely be my last thought if I'd just heard a loud explosion on a plane.

In my life time I have probably notched up somewhere in the region of between 80 & 100 flights but I still hate it , it is a means to an end for me , however the whole flying experience does nothing for me except scare me shi ---ss !

I’ve lost count but for a large part of my working life I was doing. 40 to 50 flights a year mostly around Europe but some years quite a bit of long hall. Dropped in recent years thanks to improvements in remote working. Doesn’t generally scare me though there has been the occasional period of concern. Not been on a plane for well over a year and don’t miss it at. Always found it a pain rather than scary.

When I travelled from Luxor to Cairo it was a bit scary but I like flying.

Bring back the good old days of Sopwith Camels, Gipsy Moths and Fokkers I say. Having said that I've just realised there are still quite a few of the latter in S6!
