Halcyon days. Playing as a unit. Crowd behind them. Pitch invasions from East, West and Ponty, just from the sheer joy of it. The rapturous celebrations from three corners of the ground as Eaden planted the winner. Hendrie's cheeky flick. United fans pointing to the byline in vain. Wilson celebrating in disbelief. Just like watching Brazil. One Danny Wilson. Alan Brazil. And not a smart phone in sight
I sometimes forget just how good that team was. The main attacking threat of Hendrie, Wilkinson, Redfearn and Marcelle supported by two great wingbacks and Sheridan in the hole must have been a scary proposition for opposition fans. That clip just shows how electric they were together and so hard to defend against.
It's a shame what happened to that side. We only lost Redfearn the summer after relegation. Should have been a shoe in for promotion back to the top flight. Oh well.
Losing Danny Wilson was also a massive blow Ponty, one which we didn't recover from. John Hendrie was out of his depth Im afraid, first as player/manager, and then just manager.
Remember just three nights before that brilliant match performance and win against Sheff Ure ?. There was an awful game against an awful Swindon side, managed by the thug Steve McMahon. And although the game was ruined by thick fog, those two matches were so different to each other. The players shouldn't have needed motivating for the Sheff Ure game, but I bet Wilson gave them a right rollocking building up to it.
