The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati is one of the poorest nations on Earth. It was visited by european explorers in the 1800's. It was known as The Gilbert Islands until independance from Britain. The europeans brought their dogs with them and now there are packs of dogs on some of the islands. In the local language dogs are called kameas..... this is because the natives heard the visitors continually calling 'come here' to their dogs.
